China: new political push to control Catholic Church

The government-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association has launched a nationwide campaign to reassert control over the Catholic Church, the AsiaNews service reports.

AsiaNews reports that the general secretary of the Patriotic Association, Liu Bainian, was primarily responsible for preventing Chinese bishops from traveling to Rome to participate in this month’s Synod of Bishops, and is now blocking new candidates for episcopal office. The Patriotic Association is trying to strengthen its grip on the “official” Catholic Church, fearing that the country’s Catholic leaders are growing too close to Rome.

It would be dreadful if the Vatican were to drop diplomatic relations with Taiwan, where there is freedom of religion, so as to cosy up to China; only to find that China’s words on that subject are more attractive than its behaviour. Besides, why should China be trusted ? It has the Patriotic Churches on a leash - they are free only to the extent it allows them to be. And it has persecuted them all, with great cruelty. It would be intolerably naive of the Vatican to believe Peking.

Yes. For example, China has a law limiting the number of children a family can have. It would be interesting to know whether or not ABC is considered to be a sin in the Chines Patriotic RCC.
 
Yes, they do allow/require birth control, that law is for catholics and non-catholics alike.

So China requires the use of birth control after the birth of a child? Well, then, does the Chinese Patriotic RC Church consider it a sin if a Chinese Catholic uses ABC?
