Poor countries are suffering from the coronavirus because of the Chinese Communist Party’s negligence and repression, a cardinal from Burma said Thursday.

“The Chinese regime led by the all-powerful Xi J(name removed by moderator)ing and the CCP — not its people — owes us all an apology and compensation for the destruction it has caused,” Cardinal Muang Bo, Archbishop of Yangon, wrote in an op-ed published April 2 by UCA News.

Cardinal Bo, who is head of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, denounced the Chinese regime Thursday for withholding information about the coronavirus and punishing doctors and journalists who attempted to alert the world of the virus’ potential danger.

Cardinal Muang Bo endangers himself by speaking about this issue. Pray for him.

I’m thinking the UN ought to force some recompense from the Chinese government for Corona. And if they wanted to secure freedom for the oppressed Church at the same time I wouldn’t complain.

What I’m wondering - and the dust will need to settle somewhat - is if certain countries take retributive political & economic actions and then it leads to a worldwide domino effect of other places doing the same. This probably would turn into a very bad thing, but at the same time the world needs to realize that the PRC is extremely dangerous to human rights and human welfare and not just within China itself. A more formal response through the UN would be good but I have doubts about the ability of the UN to do any such thing.

Denouncing evil has nothing to do with turning the other cheek or loving your neighbor. You can still love your neighbor but yet denounce his evil deeds

@Duke12VonFalkenburg

You say you’re currently living in China. Have you been able to get access to grocery stores and such? Reports are coming in of foreigners being categorically denied entry to various businesses even if they’ve been living there long-term.

Peace.

I would rather see China’s regime change their behaviour by being transparent about such things instead of protecting their image and do things that will help reduce the chances of viruses crossing from animals to humans. An apology and compensation would be nice but not necessary.
The same goes with other countries that are in a similar situation.

I haven’t had any problems like that. Just yesterday I was at an RT-Mart and ate Spicy Hotpot and did a lot of shopping. Thanks to my Chinese wife I have what’s called a “Green Health Card”. You have to get it through Alipay. I think without her things would be different. Single foreigners without the ability to read Chinese could have major problems. Do you have any articles about such cases of foreigners being turned away?

That sounds great, but how can there be a realistic hope of transparency in a one-party system that controls everything?

If they did that they would eventually lose their grip on power. Power is the only thing they care about.

@Duke12VonFalkenburg

There’s been a small explosion on Twitter from expats saying they can’t get into various stores or hotels.

It’s true that many hotels straight up won’t accept foreigners at all.

I thought Cardinals were meant to stay out of politics. What has this to do with his pastoral role?

This has everything to do with his responsibility of a bishop. So far, tens of thousands human lives have been lost and people have lost their jobs and their homes… All economies in the world have been greatly damaged. People are dealing with anxiety, sorrow, and grief. By the time this is over, hundreds of thousands (possibly millions) of lives will be lost.

This is much, much bigger than politics. The good Cardinal is both courageous and correct to speak out on this tragedy. He knows that he will face severe retribution from Red China. May God bless him, and protect him…

He’s not doing anything to reduce the loss of lives. He’s making claims on a flimsy evidence basis that will make life harder for all Chinese Catholics, for Vatican diplomacy and for the efforts of the Chinese government to contain the virus. In my view they have done a brilliant job and huge numbers of self-sacrificing medical workers, police, and others have put their lives at risk to keep their country and the world safe. No one is to ‘blame’ for a virus leaping species and mutating. It has happened ever since we invented agriculture.

People want answers as why it started in Wuhan and why there were cover ups and lies… It would be wise for you to stop spreading propaganda for Red China. Don’t be naive!!!

They most certainly have not done a brilliant job. They only started doing anything when they couldn’t cover it up anymore. You should watch the video about the woman who disappeared. in another thread

Every new virus infecting people enters the human population somewhere. The ‘why in Wuhan’ question is meaningless. Would you have preferred China to respond like Italy?

@FiveLinden

The Church allegedly staying out of politics is one of those often-repeated myths that has been repeated for generations but has never at any point in history been true. Church leaders try to let civil authorities do their job as much as possible, but because politics affects human welfare and human dignity, it does indeed speak about political subjects, and not to do so would be a sin of omission and possibly a grave sin of omission if the person is responsible for people and in a unique position to speak on it, such as a bishop.

As far as the issue of why: the ability of the virus to easily spread in its early stages was not coincidental but a direct result of government suppression. Like every other communist regime that has ever existed, China has an extremely strong motive to make itself look good, and in this case it will cost the lives of millions of people.
