It’s hard to even know what to say when Communist nations such as China and Vietnam take deliberate governmental action to suppress the Catholic Church. Except to warn that we are not immune to government religious repression ourselves and need to be on guard against it.

This is very true. My work has taken me to some politically unstable nations, and one of the things that you become aware of is how truly fragile the institutions we consider “immutable” are. Systems of government, militaries, social/welfare organizations, religious institutions, etc could be corrupted or crumble almost overnight if good people don’t take a stand to defend the principles & values those organizations were founded upon.
