Some talk on bay Area radio programs that Bishop Ignatius Wang may be elevated to be Archbishop of San francisco.

He is currently an auxiliarry bishop of SF. He is well liked and has done lots of work with immigrant issues which is big in California.

Additionaly, he’d give a needed face to Chinese Catholicism in California. Chinsese-Americans in California are predominatnly Buddhist with almost as many being Protestant, but only a relatively small Catholic presence.

It would be an interesting choice.

He has American citizenship, though, correct? Otherwise, that might pose some considerable travel problems, going back and forth between the US and Rome.

To have a bishop of Chinese ancestry lead the Church in any diocese in the world would also be a great witness and inspiration to the persecuted Church in China, I would think.

Oh yes, he has American citizenship. He is already an auxilliary SF bishop. He is very active in immigration and social justice issues and sounds to be very well liked.

Well-liked is nice, wise and faithful is better. Here’s hoping that he is all three, and to the nth degree!

Anyone who is a “true and faithfull” servent of God should be welcomed in SF.:dancing: The fact that he is Chinese could be a plus for the area and for us all.

It’s more common in the US for an Auxiliary Bishop to become an Ordinary in a smaller diocese first.

I say it’s more of a possibility that the new bishop would already be an Ordinary.

Bishop Vigneron of Oakland would be a good canidate, but he’s relatively new to his diocese as well (having been a auxilliary in Detroit prior)
