Choice of Mass

Hi,

Before I moved to California I attended the Tradtional Latin Mass faithfully and prefer that form. Since moving out here I’ve been going to Mass that can only be described as a combination, the Ordinary of the Mass is in Latin at all Masses and the 830 Sunday also has the Propers in Latin, everything else is in English. My sister—who had stopped going before I moved out here—will come with me and refuses to go to full Latin despite my efforts to show her that she does “know” what is being said. Also, the organist at the parish where I am has been working for years to gradually insert what is liturgically correct into the Mass—use of Latin, music, etc. But I miss Latin! Part of me feels like perhaps God wants me where I am to help with that change and direction towards the instruction of the Church, not to mention keeping my sister in Church! But I miss the EF. I don’t want to bail, but I feel a little strange going to two parishes.

That’s not really a question. Please just pray for me, I guess 🙂

You should not attend any Mass anywhere in the world, all the priests are non-Catholic heretics. You should stay home and pray a pre-Vatican II missal and say the 15 decade rosary.

I attend an EF parish and my wife attends an OF parish, she tells me there is an increasing amount of Latin at her Mass.

This is a very normal thing. Many priests celebrate Mass like this - the odinary in Latin and the propers in English. You don’t need to miss Latin - you are getting it!

I will pray for you and your sister.
 
Priests are not non-catholic heretics. They are our ‘‘Spiritual fathers’’. What right have you to insult the Priests and give false statments.
 
Thanks 🙂 The organist, who as I mentioned has been working quietly for years to have the parish do what is right, has told me I’m the answer to his years long prayers 🙂 I think he means he’s glad he has someone that’s willing to back him up!

Now if he’ll realise he’s the answer to my years long prayers… 😛

It’s good to know there are others that have a mixed language–Latin/English–Mass. I’ll keep working with them 🙂
 
I go to English Masses during the week and on Sunday I go a Latin Mass and a Spanish Mass. 🙂

I don’t know where you are but there are several area throughout the state that have very reverent and liturgically traditional Masses. Several cities even have traditional parishes. If you pm me, I will be glad to share that information withyou.

A Latin OF is good, if you can find one.

I have one near me and the readings are in Polish. The parish won’t even talk to you in English.
 
I go usually to the Regular Mass because I follow it better, but sometimes I go to the Latin Mass in the Chapel, which is a few feet away from the Main Church,because I miss the Latin Mass, we would go to when I was younger,Plus I love receiving Communion kneeling at the railing.It was hard at first to follow Latin Mass, after not going for awhile, but now I can follow it in the Latin Missal we use,and I even sing certain songs that are not to hard to follow. I also want to say to you, don,t give up on getting people to go to Latin Mass, because I tell people from time to time ,that we have Latin Mass in the Chapel, so people can enjoy taking part in Latin Mass and bring memoirs of thier life when they too were young and went to Latin Mass.
 
Sorry, ‘all Latin all the time’ is NOT the instruction or direction of the Church. Official instruction is that all things being equal, Latin (meaning at least SOME use of Latin) is to be retained. This by no means can be interpreted as seeking a return to use of only Latin everywhere to the total or near exclusion of the vernacular.

So in charity, it is fine to express your preference for Latin, but it is misleading to suggest that a combination of Latin and vernacular in NO masses is anything other than perfectly in keeping with the mind of the Church. It is what our Holy Father personally uses, after all.

I was struck by the fact that you called the Novus Ordo Mass which uses Latin a ‘combination’ between the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine. The difference between these two forms of the mass is not language. Yes, the NO can be said in the vernacular, but it can also be celebrated in Latin, whether completely or in part. If it is just that you miss the Latin and more traditional music, by all means let your wishes be known to your priest, also, maybe start talking to a bunch of the other parishioners, maybe there are others who would like some more Latin, or who mitt at least be intrigued by the possibility of it if you talk to them about it. I’ll be sure to say some prayers for you!

I was in a similar situation, only it was the parish priest whom I was staying to support. I was alternating between attending OF in my local parish and my preferred EF at another parish. I very much relate to the feelings you describe and gladly pray for you.

In my case, the situation resolved itself when the priest was transferred.

It seems like the Pope’s Masses are actually better and more universal. Before Vatican II, my parents would take me to the old Mass which had Polish readings, Polish hymns, a Polish sermon, and after Mass everyone talking in, dah, dah ------ Polish.

Ok, maybe a “Dominus vobiscum” or two, and my dad taught me the response to that, but most didn’t hear much more Latin than that.
 
If the gas tank is low and the checkbook empty I go to the local OF. Other than that I go to two different EF locations.

I’m not tied to a church building like a lot of folks.
