Choosing Last

OP, as you can see, maybe you have to expand beyond apples and try some peaches, or even potatoes. You should also know that just because an apple has a bruise, that doesn’t mean it isn’t still sweet. It doesn’t mean they still aren’t good for baking a pie or a dumpling or even apple sauce! No one is suggesting you buy a rotten apple!

Maybe you need to let go of looking for the perfect apple. After all, don’t you have a bruise or too of your own?

Indeed Irish mom, some are even pear shaped!

This is really food for thought! ha ha

In my humble opinion this analogy is flawed because it presumes major flaws where the apples are concerned, but the people selecting the apples seem to ā€œhave it all togetherā€ which would not really be the case if this were a fair analogy mirroring real life interactions between people.

So I thank you for sharing your thoughts, however I respectfully disagree that first-come-first-serve equals that the nicest, kindest, most well-rounded and spiritually sound people are the first to get married and only nasty leftovers are what is to be had if one waits.
Exactly! šŸ‘

Eric Hoffer wrote that man is like an onion, having many layers but no kernel.

I don’t have the full quotation, however, so I’m not sure where this is going.

Well, there is such a thing as a sweet onion, but corn kernels are hard to digest. 😊

This analogy has jumped the tracks.

What do you guys mean that your spouses are ā€œpotatoesā€?

Okay, I just can’t do it with this food analogy, but I will tell you that I was the last to choose among my friends and I think I got the best spouse. If my husband and I had met earlier it would have been a disaster…he was too irresponsible, I was too needy. We both had to grow and mature through some tough experiences before we were ready for marriage.

Unlike apples, some people grow and become better with time. I’m very happy with choosing last.

So just a reference to being Irish. Still, I wouldn’t have thought the Irish would enjoy such a likening.

Oh well, carry on…
Well, potatoes are sturdy. They are nutritious. You can make lots of good casseroles with them. Then there’s french fries, potato chips, … oh man, this is making me hungry!

Not to mention you say po-tay-to and I say po-tah-to,
according to this song, the basis of a happy marriage!

Until you peel them, fry them (in potentially carcinogen oil), and cover them in salt. Then they are evil…but yes, making me hungry.

šŸ˜‰ Some of the best-tasting apples are the old-fashioned varieties that need to sit in the apple store a while to mature!

I was an older bride. My husband didn’t choose a grape - he chose a fine vintage wine 😃

The main problem for me was that I wanted to stick to my beliefs and all the men I met that I got along well with had different values. It was like looking for a Worcester Permain or a Howgate Wonder in teh supermarket and just finding modern, tasteless varieties.

:thumbsup:Maybe the best place to find a good apple is at a Farmers’ Market!

I’ve thought about it a bit more and I think that the analogy could be tweaked a little.

I don’t think that it’s so much that all the good apples get taken as it is that the older you get, the harder it is to look for apples. After college, the pool of fruit that you have regular, easy access to shrinks significantly. When you start working full-time or more to launch your career, it becomes much harder to find the time to look for fruit, as delicious as it is. Often, this causes people to try to buy apples online. Sometimes that works out beautifully, and sometimes it’s a long, frustrating experience.

Anyway, you get the idea.

This is for the single and marriage-minded among you.

Imagine you are at the supermarket to buy a bag of apples. When you first arrive, there are hundreds of apple bags. Most of them are very good apples, but you can’t decide which one to select.

So, you put off making a decision while browsing the store. Hours pass, and you still haven’t made up your mind. Finally, as the store is about to close, you go back to the apple table, but discover that the only apples remaining are bruised, dented, or spoiled. Should you pick from the remaining stock, or go without?

This story is not really about apples, but rather about selecting a spouse. If you wait too long to make up your mind, none of the remaining choices may be what will satisfy you.

Remember, making no decision is a decision itself.
You do realize that tomorrow will bring a fresh truck full of apples that are probably fresher and better than the moldy, rotten bitter ones on the table right?

I married a potato scientist… But we are not Irish. Does that count?šŸ˜‰
