I suppose that the heart of the matter lies with being ‘chosen’ (though people can opt-in to being chosen as well) to have a particular relationship to our God. This doesn’t preclude others having a relationship to God, obviously, it’s just that we took on the ‘Law’.
Very down to earth explanation of that big word covenant!
For you, NT = pious myth (my thinking though is that these words are mutually exclusive since that would mean turning God into a liar…) but just think, maybe God has made another covenant with another people…
We say he made the Old with you/Jews and the New and the everlasting One with his ‘new people’, the Church. Those who were not a people are a people now…
JP II (and I’ll say God as well) says that God has not revoked his covenant with you because for one he is a faithful ‘husband’. That’s why I agree with JP II that generally we do not/ should not evangelize the Jews. Let God himself ‘sort you guys out’.
We also get Israel in the end but I do think God could have decided on somewhere like Tuscany instead but God is God after all.
It could be real or it could be symbolic.
Do you find this relationship burdensome?
Honestly I do think/believe God cannot be outdone in generosity and the faithful ones among you will have a special reward.
Allow me to grab a parallel from the NT. The glory of Jesus is very simple; he is the Son (of the Father). If we were his buddies we would say among ourselves, 'you know who he calls
Abba!, God himself!
In the
Olam-Haba, they will say of you, these are the people God chose as his own, saved them, walked with them. And I hope all Christians say, ‘these are the people who very blood flows in the one we worship as God…’
Your glory is much much more in addition to Israel…
It is an unmerited choice that came with a burden…but it is a worthwhile burden…
