If keep your eye on the Roman Catholic Peter, will you miss the biblical Jesus Christ? We are told to keep our eye on Jesus and not Peter.
Okay, sooo…

The next time you ask a question about Peter, you want me to ignore it and talk about Jesus instead? Is this some sort of test? Are you counting the times I say each of their names or something?

You know, I think that after Jesus died, if nobody kept their eyes on people like Peter, they would have ALL missed Jesus Christ.

Why do Roman Catholics seem to want to talk about Peter instead of Jesus Christ all the time? The Mormons want to talk about Jospeh Smith instead of Jesus Christ too. Look at the word of Christianity, or Catholic Christainity. Do you see Christ in the word Christianity. Do you see the word Peter or Cephas, or Simon in the words of Catholic Christian? If you do, then you are missing the real thing.

You have the Orthodox Church, all Protestant Churches, Anglican Churches, Church of Christ, that all reject the Roman Catholic interpertation of Matthew 16. Therefore, it is only Roman Catholics who stand alone in your view of the rock. If you do a search in the Scriptures, the rock is a reference to God all throughout the Holy Bible.
Many Protestants understand that Peter, in Mt. 16:18-19 is the Rock.

The Orthodox who have not succumbed to anti-Catholic rhetoric developed by hostile Protestants lament the separation of communion. When the Ecumenical Patriarch recently addressed the Vatican-sponsored synod on Sacred Scripture, he referred to the pope as “my elder brother.”

When I was an Anglican, I fully understood that Jesus intended Peter’s successor (the Pope) to be the head of the Church and that the schism from Rome was a disaster I hoped would be repaired in my own lifetime.

God is THE Rock. Peter is the rock upon which Jesus promised to build HIS Church.

Your “problem” is not with the Catholic Church or with Peter. Your problem is with Jesus Christ and with the Bible.

You were Roman Catholic even before you became Roman Catholic…LOL. Am I correct to say that Anglicans did not come from the Protestant Reformation. I sure like the 39 Articles of Faith though.

In a discussion on whether or not Jesus appointed Peter the head of a church, are you at all surprised that Peter will be mentioned a lot? :doh2:

Seriously! This is like saying, “Don’t talk about parables because Jesus isn’t in them.” Don’t talk about Peter because he’s not Jesus. There’s more to Christianity than just talking about Jesus. Even he talked about things other than himself!

How about looking at a discussion in which some people deny Jesus? I’m sure you’ll find Catholics will talk about Jesus a lot more than Peter then.

Just like “don’t talk about Mary! She is NOWHERE in the Bible” don’t you know?
😉

First of all, which Peter are we talking about? How are we to know what Peter is like, through the Bible? I guess the same can be said about Mary. But we are drifting way beyond the thread topic, and away from the centrality of Jesus Christ.

On the contrary…when we seek to understand those Christians who have gone before us… We grow close to Christ because we are following in their footsteps. Their lives will only and always point us to Christ:)

Ashley,

I can tell you posted, but your posts are concealed from me. I’m glad you are posting.

check your ignore list maybe you put her on it by accident.
As Christians, we only believe in divine providence. There are no accidents in Gods’ world. 😉 But, thanks for the information my friend!

And Muslims are not condemned for being Muslims. Please reflect on that for awhile. Humanity is only divided into two groups, those who are united to Adam and those who are unted to the 2nd Adam (romans 5). Christ came into this world to rescus sinners from their already condemned conditon. That is His mission to the glory of God. The gospel is such a glorious act of God’s love when understood in fullness of truth.
When we are united to Christ, we no longer live but Christ lives in us. God sees us in His beloved Son where there is no condemnation. It is only because of our union with Christ that we have peace with God. It has nothing to do with being Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or Muslim. This is a universal truth, because Christ came to rescue sinners from all tongue, tribes, and nations. Therefore, all nations can rejoice what God has done in Christ. What does the U stand for on my chest? The U stands for our vital union with Jesus Christ. Christ is everything to the Christian…oops that’s another thread, but that should be the central theme for all who love the Lord Jesus Christ.
reply:
Underdog, I think you are just confusing what it means to be “in Christ.” We all agree that Christ is everything…that we are either united to Him, united to truth… Or united to Adam in sin. You are right to say salvation doesn’t come by being Catholic, muslim, agnostic, or any other religion… It only comes through Christ, Jesus!
What we ARE disagreeing on, however, is that God may choose to reveal Jesus to our hearts how GOD wills to do so. Not underdog, ashleybelle, catholicism, islam, Christianity, atheism or anything else reveals Christ to our hearts…but God alone…through HIS grace alone. We may not put a label and limitation on How God may choose to reveal Christ to our hearts…And the Catholic church simply recognizes that because of His great love and power, God may choose to reveal Christ in ways that we do not understand.
We must be united to Christ in order to recieve His salvation…But you are placing limitations that simply do not exist on how we may be united to Him. It is of course desirable that we know Him fully…and we believe the FULLNESS of truth, the fullness of Christ, is present in His church; The Catholic Church. All salvation, all of Christ is offered to the whole world through His church, the body of Christ. Those who are not “fully united” MAY still be mystically united, because of God’s great mercy.
We are acknowledging that nobody can know the state of our hearts…only God. And we are acknowledging that He is greater than our understanding, and His truth is saving!
Why do you limit the power of God and the power of the cross? Does it frighten you to imagine that somehow God may extend His grace to those who do not know Christ as fully as you do?

Thanks for sharing Ashley. I enjoy are discussions, but we really need a long break from each other. I wish you the very best in Christ. When I am ready again, we will continue our discussion. I am very interested to hear from Muslim worshippers of God.

I am not trying to frustrate you, or criticize you for what you believe…But I am asking these questions to CHALLENGE you. Or are you content with a “comfortable” faith?
I will ask again… Are you afraid of the idea that God may choose in His great power and mercy, to reveal Christ to the hearts of others who do not know Him as fully as you do?
I’m sorry that you feel we “need a long break from each other.” We are all contributing to these forums for a reason…And I feel that even if my questions make you uncomfortable, they are no less worthy of consideration. Your response is yet again, something I’ve grown accustomed to from posters with similar belief systems as yours: a great big, sweeping “brush off.”

Please Ashley, let’s take a break from each other. I will be putting you on ignore so I won’t be able to read what you post.
There you have it… some things are not worth discussing if they truly cause us to reflect on what we believe.

Though the jury is still out as to whether I am actually “on ignore…” as I’ve been told the same thing by others who make similar statements to underdog…and it turned out it was not their computer “tuning out” my words;)

Hi AshleyBelle 🙂

I love reading your and the other really strong posters here - it never ceases to amaze me how little I know when I read you guys, and most impressive of all is the calm, charitable, kind, gracious and loving way you post.

I have much to learn 😊

Now that’s a new topic. Do accidents happen in God’s world? How about the life of Joseph, or Job?

God bless your heart, AgNot :hug1:

I think we can learn much from each other! I always enjoy your posts…they are refreshing and full of beautiful insight. God is doing a great work in your heart and your life and I’m sure I can speak for others when I say you are a true inspiration on these boards:)

As for the “calm” way I post…heeehehee I think you give me too much credit! Sometimes I need a HUGEEEE step away from the computer and lots of prayer and snuggles with my little ones to remind me of Christian charity =P

Thanks for you kind words, as always!

Who spared your life? There’s a new thread called accident or providence. If it’s God will, you will join me on that thread.
