Read in revelation about the woman and the dragon - it’s great stuff I tell you.😃
It’s about Satan trying to stop Mary’s pregnancy succeeding in the birth of Christ, the devil tries to destroy her son but God does not allow him to do so! Mwah, ha, ha, ha!😉

score board

God - 1 (his son)
Satan - nill (as usual)
:rotfl:
I know; that’s one of my favorite passages!!! 👍

The catholic church throughout India uses “He went down to the dead” instead of “He descended into hell” The usage of “dead” is also seen in three other languages in india.I belive its the same with all indian languages, but not sure. Even for me the word “hell” was a recent discovery coz eversince my first holy communion in 99’ till date, we have been using “dead”. If the catholic churches are using it, thats something which the vactican accepts.

Thank you PJM! 😃 Great stuff!:yeah_me:

Interesting. Not to be argumentative, but what about a kind of set-up in which Satan himself is trapped in hell, like Dante imagines…?

I’ve got no idea what freedom Satan has. In Job he allegedly mentions he’s been moving around the earth, and happened to see Job, and then challenged God to let him have a go at him. But since Job is just one poet’s attempted explanation for suffering, then it’s a moot point whether this sort of thing actually happens. I suspect it does however.

For whatever reason, Satan seems to be allowed a certain amount of mobility. He is of course doomed, with his final end the lake of fire, which seems to be like molten glass. But he’s determined to take as many of us with him as he can, since he blames us for his predicament.

He’s a reality. I have a DVD at home with a retreat by Bishop Fulton Sheen (long time ago). In it he mentions a Vietnamese village girl, apparently possessed, who spoke perfect Latin, French and some other language to a priest, despite having never learned any of them. The demonic therefore has some ability to move in human circles. When they’re driven out however, they seem to go back to hell, which they fear and hate. Which is why when Christ drove them out, they always screamed. Their holiday was over.

I remember speaking to someone who had himself performed exorcisms, and I remember his comment “They really carry on! They don’t want to go!”

Makes sense, since when Christ comes across the man possessed by Legion (a large number of demons who simply took a collective name) they beg Him not to send them into the abyss (Luke 8:31).

Well, do you think that demons are the angels that fell with Satan when God cast him out of hell, or do you think that people who go to hell can also be demons?🤷

In the bible and in the Apostles’ Creed prayer it says that Christ descended into hell for three days! Was he really there, and do you think he was suffering actual torment while down there? But he never sinned so how can Satan punish him while he was in hell?
Was it once again another way of Christ knowing what we go through as humans?🤷

It’s an interesting though that God went to hell for three days!

Yes, the demons are those angels that fell when they chose to follow Satan.

Humans, though they can be influenced by demons, are not demons, nor can they
“become” demons. Demons have a different nature. They are non-corporeal beings.

Bob Crowley;I’ve got no idea what freedom Satan has.

***He has an astounding amount of freedom and power.
However Satan cannot over rule one’s freewill any more than God Can [by God’s design] so the way Satan gains access is through our emotions.***
For whatever reason,

***The reason is precisly to enable to make RIGHT USE of our minds, intellects and freewill’s, and there by give evidence of our Love and Obedience to God. [Isaiah 43: 7 and 21].

I’m not sure that “he blames us as much as He blames God Himself” and I suspect He has a special dislike of the Arc-Angels, most especially, Michael :D***

John 5: 13 "Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you."

Seems to imply that even after a denon has been evicted, their is danger of reoccurence and even worse posession might be possible.

I remember speaking to someone who had himself performed exorcisms, and I remember his comment “They really carry on! They don’t want to go!”

Better him than me. What an awesome responsibility:o

Demons…they really hate God don’t they?! I think that they need to let their grudge go…
They haven’t for thousands upon thousands of years. I doubt they will anytime soon.

I feel worse for those human beings who have the power to break away from their grudge and refuse not to.

No one can refuse such gentle and kind nudges towards the father. Christ was gentle and forgiving, so if we all approach lost people with such a kind and gentle heart then surly we can delicately nudge them towards the Lord with us.

Do you remember the hail Mary prayer? What about hail holy queen, think about what the prayer says;

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs mourning
and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this our exile show us the
Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
O clement, O** loving,** O **sweet **Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

All of the words in bold, you should apply them to your self! 😛
Be gentle, sweet and loving then we can go to the broken and they will accept our help for them.

xxx bless xxx

Jennifer, the choice of Hell, whether by men or angels is irrevocable. No wishful thinking will change it.

(From the Council of Constantinople’, 543 A.D.) : “If anyone holds that the punishment of demons and of impious men is temporary, and that it will have an end at some time, or that there will be complete restoration of demons and impious men, anathema sit.”

Please see, too, the Catechism, nbrs. 1034, 1035, 1036, 1037.

Zundrah,
From what I have read, Pope Benedict XVI gives the best explanation of Christ’s desent into Hell in his work, “Introduction to Christianity”. I strongly suggest you read this work as a whole and that particular section in regards to you inquiry.

I was discussing this topic to some evangelicals at another forum and a good explanation is to be found in the haydock bible commentary.

This is what is said about 1 Peter 3:19

Ver. 19. In which (to wit, soul or spirit) also he came, and preached to those spirits who were in prison. The true and common interpretation of this place seems to be, that the soul of Christ, after the separation from the body and before the resurrection, descended to a place in the interior parts of the earth, called hell in that which we call the apostles’ creed, (sometimes called Abraham’s bosom, sometimes Limbus Patrum[Limbo of the Fathers], a place where were detained all the souls of the patriarchs, prophets, and just men, as it were in prison) and preached to these spirits in this prison; i.e. brought them this happy news, that he who was their Redeemer was now come to be their deliverer, and that at his glorious ascension they should enter with him into heaven, where none could enter before our Redeemer, who opened as it were heaven’s gates.

Among these were many who had been formerly at first incredulous in the time of Noe[Noah], who would not take warning from his preparing and building the ark, but it may be reasonably supposed that many of them repented of their sins when they saw the danger approaching, and before they perished by the waters of the deluge, so that they died at least not guilty of eternal damnation; because, though they were sinners, yet they worshipped the true God, for we do not find any proofs of idolatry before the deluge.

These then, and all the souls of the just, Christ descended to free from their captivity, from their prison, and to lead them at his ascension triumphant with him into heaven. The Church of England cannot quarrel with this exposition, which seems altogether conformable to the third of their thirty-nine articles, which at present runs thus: “As Christ died for us, and was buried, so also it is to be believed that he went down into hell.”

It is thus expressed in the articles under queen Elizabeth, in the year 1562; and in the articles put out ten years before, in the year 1552, in the fourth year of king Edward the sixth, the words were: “that the body of Christ lay in the grave until his resurrection, but the spirit which he gave up was with the spirits which were detained in prison, or in hell, and preached to them, as the place in St. Peter testifieth.” Dr. Pearson on the fifth article of the creed, writes thus: “There is nothing which the Fathers agree in more, than as to a local and real descent of the soul of Christ into the infernal parts, unto the habitation of the souls departed…
This was the general opinion of the Church, as may appear by the testimonies of those ancient writers, who lived successively and wrote in several ages, and delivered this exposition in such express terms as are not capable of any other interpretation.” Thus Dr. Pearson. He cites the Fathers. See the edition, in the year 1683, p. 237. (Witham) — Prison. See here a proof of a third place, or middle state of souls: for these spirits in prison, to whom Christ went to preach after his death, were not in heaven, nor yet in the hell of the damned; because heaven is no prison, and Christ did not go to preach to the damned. (Challoner) — St. Augustine, in his 99th epistle, confesses that this text is replete with difficulties.

This he declares is clear, beyond all doubt, that Jesus Christ descended in soul after his death into the regions below, and concludes with these words: Quis ergo nisi infidelis negaverit fuisse apud inferos Christum? In this prison souls would not be detained unless they were indebted to divine justice, nor would salvation be preached to them unless they were in a state that was capable of receiving salvation.
