I want to see if I can go without CAF for a month then I’ll extend it to another month. I broke my promise already. Wish me luck. I hope I make a month

From my experience, Catholic and Christian forums and subreddits haven’t helped my faith grow. Perhaps I’m responding to the wrong message boards. I thought the more I immersed myself in a Catholic environment the more holy I’d become. Perhaps it’s the topics I choose to read. I’ve become less religious, more jaded and honestly less attracted to the faith. I guess I’m surprised by some of the opinions posted on a Catholic forum. It has helped me to reconsider my opinions on particular matters. It’s been a place to freely discuss Catholic issue. I think I need a hiatus for while. Thanks for the support.
I haven’t posted or read much over the last couple of months for similar reasons as you. Though not much surprises me nowadays. Getting old in the tooth. Forums are not really the safest place to discuss Catholic issues or spiritual concerns freely unless you are strong enough for a battering of opinions.

Best to talk face to face with a trusted person to get help and answers.

All such things begin a day at a time, an hour at a time, a moment at a time. Have you considered fasting from CAF for a smaller period to start?

Take up beekeeping. You’ll feel sweeter every time you rob them of their honey, and every one of those hundreds of stings will be a penance for a comment made here. Works for me!

You might get more out of listening to catholic radio. I love listening to Fr. John Riccardo’s pod casts.

This forum can be a good or a bad thing. I do this the website itself is great, lots of info in the encyclopedia/library, etc. The forum is more for entertainment. JMHO

I wonder why.

Is it because they presented ideas you hadn’t been exposed to before? Or because you ran into people who tarnished your view of what you thought Christians should be?

If the former, just realize everyone on here is just sharing their interpretation of the faith. Seek the counsel of a priest offline to bring to him the issues that you found problematic.

If the latter, you will always meet people who do not live up to the name Christian. They’re human. So are you.

Will remember you in my prayers. A break is probably best.

The more spiritual threads don’t seem to be as bad as the more political ones.

Forums don’t make you holy; grace does.

Whenever I get irritated at fellow Catholics (on social media templates or forums like this), I have to step back and ask myself: But have I actually given time to God today? Have I actually spent time with God in prayer?

Intellectual pursuits even in theology are just that: Intellectual pursuits. Someone can know a heck of a lot of theology and church history and still be a mean-spirited person.

I recommend you come to CAF if you have real intellectual questions, for there are smart people here. But if you want the bright side of the Faith, check out the saints. And for personal spiritual growth, try some spiritual reading in the form of a book. Check out EWTN.

The political threads can be just as important as the spiritual ones though. Politics is a necessary component of spiritual warfare especially when a political ideology goes against the life teachings of Jesus such as the liberal left in the USA.

I’m tired of people demonizing the liberal left, if I had to be honest that’s a reason I considered leaning. The conservative party isn’t holy either.

I learned things here I wouldn’t have learned my daily life. Some posters on here border on racist, I expected more from a Catholic forum. Some interpretation of the faith seem to border on unhealthy practices. Self blame doesn’t equal humility. It’s almost masochistic.

I rarely enter that place of horrors.

Being a libertarian, I find too much to disagree with and too little time to argue.

you are right, but I think that these polarized parties “demonize” each other. Political parties make no claim to be “holy”, and you are right, both have their failings.

You are also right that the prejudice, bigotry, and lack of charity do get “old” . I realize that CAF is not a faithful representation of our society, but I must admit, it has helped me to be more realistic reading some of these “demonizing posts”. I have structured my personal live to avoid such persons, and it is good for me to have an occasional wake up call that such person are not only alive and well in America, but that they vote.

Yes, Catholics have their share of bigotry and prejudice. It is good that you know your expectations, as these ideas of what we want from others are the main source of disappointment and frustration in our lives. While it would be great if all those claiming to be Catholic would demonstrate the fruit of the Holy Spirit, the fact is that the Church is a sanctuary for sinners, not a museum of saints.

When you find that you are disappointed by others, consider that this is, in itself, a call to holiness. It is much harder to love those whose behavior we find objectionable, and whose attitudes are contrary to what they claim to believe. Ultimately, we are all responsible with our own holiness and salvation, not that of others.
I think the political forums are ones driving me to leave
Yes, I recommend avoiding those in favor of pretty much everything else.
