A 16-year-old Christian boy has been held on blasphemy charges in the Pakistani city of Karachi.

The boy, named by police as Ryan Stanten, is said to have forwarded a text message which allegedly contained offensive material on Tuesday.

The following day an angry crowd ransacked his family home, setting fire to their belongings on the street.

Pakistan’s blasphemy laws have been criticised for their severity and for being open to abuse.

More detail:

KARACHI, PAKISTAN (BosNewsLife)-- A 16-year-old Christian boy and his parents and sister were hiding in Pakistan Thursday, October 11, after police charged him with blasphemy against Islam’s prophet Mohammed through text messages, while an angry crowd burned their home.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with BosNewsLife, Ryan Stanton, said he had been framed by “Muslim friends” he knew from his middle class neighborhood in the city of Karachi.

“We were traveling by car to see a cricket match when one of the Muslims asked me: ‘can I use your phone?’. I don’t know what happened after that,” a visibly shaken Ryan told BosNewsLife.

Praying for this boy and his family.

If the story he told is true, it sounds like yet another set-up situation. It could be a personal thing, racism, jealousy, or envy of his family’s wealth. Or it could be yet another case where the blasphemy laws are used to try and force Christians out of Pakistan.

Praying for all Christians in Pakistan.

This is getting totally out of hand now… Looks like being Chrisitian is blasphemous :banghead:

religion of peace? 😦 They burned this young man’s family’s home! Oh wait…these aren’t the peaceful ones…Where are the peaceful ones? Where are the ones that would take Christians in or protect them?

I thought Christians were “people of the book” to Muslims?

I wonder if this is a setup, just like the young girl with downs syndrome whom was accused of burning pages of the Koran.

What he is going through is very hard and I recognize that. He should rejoice though… What did the Lord say about being persecuted in his name… :). I never read the Koran but from what I understand they worship the same God as us but do not have faith in his Son.

The result of this critical error seems to be evident throughout the Muslim world.

The peaceful ones are the hundreds of millions who remain “silent” in the light of all this violence again and again and again. They have a chance to voice their opinions against this complete disregard to human dignity in their impoverished countries, yet they remain silent because at the end of the day they agree with it. No one can say it’s silence out of fear of being harmed. Christians killed for not accepting Allah, they walk by silently. Quran is burned somewhere in a country they’d never even heard of, they’re rallying all over the place and burning things and being unruly.

Oops. I just noticed there was an article by Fides on this posted here early this morning. I’ll add it to this thread.

Karachi (Agenzia Fides) - Protests, threats and an attempt to “rough justice” against a Christian teenager, accused of having sent some Muslims peers a blasphemous text message: This is what occurred in the district of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, in the bourgeois area of Karachi, a city in the south of Pakistan. As reported to Fides by the local NGO “World Vision in Progress”, the home of the boy’s family was ransacked and set on fire last night after a violent protest by Islamic fundamentalists. The boy, 15 year old Ryan Brian Patus and his family were rescued by the NGO. Have escaped the murderous rage because, at the time of the attack, Ryan was in the hospital to assist his father, seriously ill, and his family, fearing reprisals, had preferred to abandon the house. The police intervened on the spot, said the boy is accused of sending a blasphemous text message that began to circulate among the residents of the area, triggering reactions. Ryan claims to have received and forwarded the text message to his friends without reading it carefully. He has been accused by two witnesses and the Imam Qari Ghulam Qadir, of the the Jamia mosque, who registered a First Information Report (formal complaint) for breach of Article 295c of the Penal Code (insulting the Prophet Mohammed).

It also mentioned the case of Rimsha Masih. The Imam was granted a bail of 200k rupees. All the witnesses have retracted their statements against the Imam accused of trying to frame Rimsha, but the withdrawal is unacceptable by law. The hearing for Rimsha’s case in hopes of full acquittal is Oct 17.
