Christian Heavy Metal?

HB falls into that category. The vocals aren’t as good and the lyrics are a bit more on the cheesy side. But their albums are also available in Finnish, so if you listen to those versions, you won’t notice. 😄

This is probably my favorite song of theirs:


Leah (posted above) is sometimes put in that category, but she’s a bit more celtic/folksy. Some of her songs are on the more symphonic side, though.
 
Oooh, thanks. I kinda stopped listening to a lot of metal a while ago, but have been having a bit of a hankering recently. Also, I like Celtic / folksy in the right context, so I’ll have to check the other posts as well. Over the Hills and Far Away is probably my favorite Nightwish song, or at least pretty high on the list, and it has some heavy Celtic influences.

I have to say though, you weren’t’ kidding about them being a little cheesy…

Edit: I’m really liking LEAH, their lead singer has a great voice.

😁 Indeed. That’s why I often find myself listening to the Finnish versions. They have 4 albums that were all first released in Finnish. The first 3 were eventually released in English, though some of the songs are substantially different, and some of the tracks are even new.

This song of theirs has probably one of my favorite instrumental intros. The first minute is awesome:

 
Is the point of explicitly Christian metal to expunge the supposedly ‘demonic’ or occult content of the lyrics of regular metal? Because the music taken as instrumental music sounds the same. In other words, it doesn’t seem to be a subgenre except insofar as the lyrics and themes explored won’t be offensive to a traditional-minded Catholic (or Christian).

It probably depends on the band what their purpose is. “Christian” really only describes the lyrics, so it isn’t necessarily the most helpful modifier when trying to describe what the music sounds like.

For example, compare the band in the OP, Stryper, Theocracy, Saviour Machine, and Mortification. They are all very different styles of metal music. But they are all called “Christian metal.”

Maybe I’ll check out the Finnish versions. I tried listening to some of their songs in English a while back, and I couldn’t stand the cheese.

To expand a bit on Joe’s answer…

Right, it’s not a subgenre at all. As Joe said, when ‘Christian’ is put with metal, all it does is tell you about the lyrical focus. Every metal subgenre (the musical style) has Christian artists.

So talking about “Christian metal” without further definition is of limited value.

The two just don’t seem to go together.

This song gives me eargasms and I always want to have Pentecostal type pleasure seizures with intense head banging if you get the gist. (Also I know that sounds really wrong but it’s not meant to be. Lol)

I had an ex who used To work at a yoghurt factory they made a chilli chocolate yoghurt one year and it was absolutely delish
 
You could make the argument that Skillet is hard rock or metal (or both). I’ve never been a big fan (have liked a few songs here and there), but I recently bought their new album based on the power of this 2017 single. I think I was hooked the first time I heard the chorus.

Yeah, I never paid much attention to Skillet, but that is a pretty catchy chorus, and a fun instrumental outro.

I love Skillet - at least their more recent stuff, since about 2010 when I first saw them in concert. I haven’t gotten into their earlier stuff as much.
