Hi,
Can anyone suggest a solid theological, historical and cultural book that compares and contrasts Christianity, Islam and Judaism? Ideally, I’d like something by a sound Catholic author but it’s not a requirement.

Thanks!

Father Anthony Alexander in his book COLLEGE Apologetics speaks to the Jewish, Protestant and Islam faiths in his teaching book above. Not in every detail or depth, but just on the reason why they are not correct.

Hello Familyman87;

Last year I had the privilege to go to Jerusalem, and stand by the Wailing Wall, which is a sacred place to the Jews. But when you walk back fifty paces and look above the wall, you see the golden dome of ‘The Dome of the Rock Mosque, and the Al Aqsa sacred to Islam.

It is said in Judaism and Christianity, that God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son in the region of Mount Moriah. It is also said that God commanded Solomon to build the Temple Mount on Mount Moriah, this is a huge structure, a small part of it is what we know as the Wailing Wall, or Western Wall. On top of the Temple Mount, God commanded Solomon to build a Temple, that will house ‘The Ark of the Covenant’ better known for the Ten Commandments. Jesus prayed on the Temple Mount, and when he healed people he sent them to the Temple to give thanks.

The Temple was destroyed and rebuilt twice, and the Two Mosques were built on top of the Temple Mount, were the Temple once stood. The Dome is said to be the place where the prophet pbuh, ascended up to heaven on his winged horse.

It seems that God has linked Judaism, Christianity and Islam together on this one sacred place. God could have made our lives much easier if he had placed our three religions a hundred miles apart, but is seems that God has some greater purpose by bringing all three religions together in one place.

Today there is tension in Jerusalem, most of the Christian holy places are within the walls of the Muslim Community, this is surrounded by the Jews.

But why would God link all these things together?

In the spirit of searching for a greatest meaning of One God

What an absurd statement to make it seem that it’s somehow God fault for turmoil in that region for linking them all to Jerusalem. Anyway muslims have mecca and Christians have Rome -and they are miles apart.

Agreed. And what purpose that Islam must go to Jerusalem and build a mosque on top of the ancient location of temple, and to convert Hagia Sophia church to be a mosque, in Constantinople? Sounds like to conquer both Judaism and Christianism to me.

Hello swariffin;

The prophet phuh, ascended to heaven from this place, so it is sacred to Islam also, why would God bring these three religions together in one place?

Ishmael was the first to be circumcised by Abraham and so Islam came first and symbolises FAITH. Judaism came from Isaac who was born after Abraham had persevered in hope and symbolises HOPE. Christianity came through Jesus Christ the promised Messiah (Savior) who is simultaneously Son of God and descendant of David. Christianity symbolises LOVE. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1Cor 13:13)

Fundamental lack of understanding. The two newest most populated religions in the world are Christology and Islam. Islam is dated to 610 CE and Christology to 30 CE. And thats Archaelogy combined with Geography to give us accurate History.

The false interpretation of the Bible is rhetoric, plan and simple.

The oldest religion is Hindu with dates to 1500 BCE with Buddism being an offshoot a bit later about 600 BCE. Judaism came in 1800 BCE with Abraham and was Mose’s inspired to write the Torah about 1400 BCE.

There are others forms off religion which can included inbetween these if you consider Wicka and Paganism and even earlier than Hindu if you consider ancient religious artifacts uncovered in Africa 30,000. years old.

… Islam is dated to 610 CE …
Islam certainly existed even before Prophet Mohammed. Are you denying the fact that there were 12 circumcised tribes of Ishmael. Are you saying that Jethro (an Ishmaelite), Moses’ father-in-law did not receive the Law through Moses

I’m saying no Islam before Mohammad plain and simple. Thats more false interpretation of the Bible which has nothing to do with Islam or the Quran…Period. It cannot be Historically proved. Its an assumption…Period.

I wonder if you are qualified to say so. The Bible says in plain words that Jethro was the Priest of Midian (Exodus 3:1). Of which religion? It was certainly NOT Judaism. The whole world knows that Prophet Mohammed is a descendant of Ishmael. The Bible tells us that Ishmael was the first to be circumcised by Abraham. The Bible also tells us that God blessed the Ishmaelites to be one of the most populous peoples on earth. Are you so thick that you can’t understand these simple biblical truths.

Check out Welcome to the Wisdom of the World, by Sr. Joan Chittister.

Little attitude when the world doesn’t agree with you I see. Your “opinion” is the Bible according to Islamic View.

Lets examine the specific verse’s of the Bible since you would like to talk Bible.

BTW your view on Exodus in another incorrect assumption. You should actually read chapter 2 and then you’ll understand 3.

Here’s some info for the Midians who helped Mose’s escape Egypt. There not of Islamic Faith nor does the Quran eiother teach this. Think about this, the Quran written 800 years after the New Testament mentions the Midians in Sura. Read what it says about them. It tells you Islam sent 7-Prophets to convert them. So they were not Islamic until after the writting of the Quran {FACT}.

The Midianites through their apparent religio-political connection with the Moabites are thought to have worshipped a multitude of gods, including Baal-peor and the Queen of Heaven, Ashteroth. An Egyptian temple of Hathor at Timna` continued to be used during the Midianite occupation of the site. However, whether Hathor or some other deity was the object of devotion during this period is impossible to ascertain.

Some historians suggest that the worship of Yahweh originated in pre-Israelite peoples of the Levant region, specifically in Midian. The Hebrew Bible mentions that Moses first encountered Yahweh as a burning bush in Midian. An Egyptian inscription also relates the Shasu, who are described as living south of Palestine, with the name YHW.

So if anything they would have been what? …Not Islamic for sure. They were nomadic shepards with a Pagan belief.

I can’t speak much for other than Islam really. I think you’ll have to probably buy at least 3 books, I know of no single book that covers what you say and I’ve wanted one for about 10 years. I would suggest buying books by respected academics of that faith because there is no point interpretting a religion by other than the way they understand it, the BBC/religion website is probably the best first port of call, its really really good. One World Publications has a nice selection about all facets of religion written by well renound academics also anything from Oxford or Cambridge University are always superb. I understand that Fr Hans Kung’s book on Islam is very good and is detailed also the orientalist of SUNY William Chittick and his wife did a really good overview of Islam called the Vision of Islam. In terms of a good book for the main aspects of the religion, something you might get for a degree in Islamic Studies then I’d recommend
History the Oxford History of Islam by John Esposito is authorotative and very detailed.
Theology The Cambridge companion to Classical Theology by T J Winter is probably the only really detailed book in English on Islamic theology.
Law In terms of Shariah Law then I’d suggest A R I Doi’s Shariah: Islamic Law, it gives overviews, references and examples rather than being a book of laws - highly prized in academic circles
Mysticism Chittick’s the Sufi path of love is a very very good overview of Sufiism - Murshids (Spiritual guides) use this book as a teaching tool.
I know its a lot, but anything worth while is worth working for 🙂

PS: would love to know a similarly good reading list for Catholicism and Judaism
