During his weekly public audience on November 28, Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news), exposed the error in the belief, widespread today, that “Christianity is a European religion that was subsequently exported” to other culture. In his remarks to the 8,000 people who assembled in the Vatican’s Paul VI auditorium, the Holy Father concentrated on St. Ephrem the Syrian, noting in the process that the origins of Christianity lie in “Jerusalem and the Semitic world.”

Well, it is true that the origin of Christianity lies in the Semitic world. Jesus and the Apostles were Jews and his early followers were Jewish Christians. But it nevertheless became a European religion with its seat in Rome and its official language Latin both European. By the 15th century all popes had been European - none Semitic- for at least 1000 years and the schism with the Eastern Rite over 500 years old. It was the Spanish who started the export of Christianity to the Americas which was later followed by other groups.

And your point?

Are you sure? If I recall correctly Peter was Jewish himself.

A distinction without differentiation.

But before the Spanish began exporting Christianity, it spread eastward by other processes - certainly into central Asia via migration, missionaries and traders.

Christianity is a world religion, this was God’s intent in sending us His Son.

True, Peter was Jewish, but he was a contemporary of Jesus and lived a long time before 400 AD. (Note I said 1000 years prior to the 15th century.)

True, Christianity is a world religion and spread in all directions by various means.
