Christians ‘more militant’ and homophobic than Muslims: UK Equalities Chief

LONDON, June 20, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Despite Britain being an officially Christian country with a majority Christian population and a Christian heritage reaching back to the 7th century AD, the UK’s equalities chief has said that Christians need to “integrate” better into Britain’s “modern liberal democracy.” Compared to Muslims, he said, Christians are “more militant” and have a harder time blending in.

“There are a lot of Christian activist voices who appear bent on stressing the kind of persecution that I don’t think really exists in this country,” said Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

The current movement towards doctrinal and moral orthodoxy in the Anglican and Catholic churches is a revival of :eek:“an old time religion incompatible with modern society”:eek: that is clashing with “mainstream” views, especially on homosexuality, he continued.

Well, I live here, and it is quite pleasant, on the whole.

Please explain your reference to ‘Brazil’. I haven’t seen it.
 
I see - thank you, Jharek. The comparison is a tad forced and exaggerated then, would you say?
 
My reaction to the “Equalities Chief’s” (love that title - but isn’t it rather oxymoronic??) statements was somewhat different.

In general, I agreed with him. One does not not need to be much of a student of humanity to realize that Catholics are far less tolerant of homosexuality than Muslims. The fate of the son of the last commander at Rhodes, who was made a catamite, comes to mind. As to the posturing of the Persian mullahs, one must recall that they are consciously competing with the Church. More or less, Islam has always done so, as perusing the Koran well illustrates.

It also stands to reason that the vast majority of Muslims in Britain, or any western country, will be there because they prefer the western lifestyle overall to a Muslim country’s. There of course will be holdouts, and that can cause problems if they are ghettoized, as is said to occur in places in France.

The E.Chief was also correct in his assessment that long-term and philosophically, “conservative” Christians are more inimical to certain of HM government’s policies than Muslims. Muslims have a longer, happier tradition of cooperating with civil authority than either Catholics or dissenters. Islam has not produced a Campion, Bellarmine, de las Casas, or for that matter, a Knox or Winthrop. Modern governments, even mild ones like the UK, are absolutist, and betwixt us and them is a great gulf fixed.

Where the E Chief is wrong is in stating that Catholics and evangelical Christians, as a body, want HM’s protection in the manner he proposes to give it. His method is to maintain a balance between all of the groups, basically relegating the issue of religion out of the public sphere insofar as possible. This ultimately fails, because Catholics and other “missionary” Christians cannot accept the accept the status quo - they absolutely demand their freedom to propagate the faith.

Sooner or later, the fault line is revealed and conflict results. From the state’s point of view, Catholics and their ilk are at fault more than other groups.
