I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time. We Christians are always being bashed and hated upon because we don’t agree with certain practices, namely abortion and gay marriage. Take homosexuals. Here in Canada, we have one of the largest Pride parades in the world, which takes place in Toronto. Over a million people go to the streets and watch this circus parade and love it. But when we Christians have the idea of having a Christian Pride parade, we’re bashed because it apparently promotes hate towards homosexuals. Like what type of world are we living in when some people, like Christians can’t show pride in their faith publicly? We say one simple thing like homosexual marriage isn’t biblical and wrong and yet are bashed and hated upon. But when homosexuals say something like Christians are non-loving monsters, no one says anything! I am really sick of this homosexual agenda that keeps on putting more and more hate on us Christians. We as Christians have the right to stand up for our beliefs and showcase our beliefs to the world, and we shouldn’t let this small minority of people put us down. Even normal people bash us and it needs to stop!

We’re not the ones that are being discriminatory it’s the homosexuals, the pro-abortionists and the atheists who are promoting hate.

Sorry for this rant, I am just getting sick and tired of being bashed like so many other Christians about our faith and beliefs.

No argument here.

What’s quite enjoyable is to hook up with others like yourself - and there are many, despite the media bias - and have your own protest.

How’d you like to visit Sodom-on-the-Bay in January? The Walk for Life is great fun. It’s never been as exciting as the first year, when the city actually passed a resolution condemning the Catholic church and organized a counter-demonstration, but it still throws a scare into the radical Left when we show up en masse.

Here’s a photo essay of the first one. Not for the squeamish. There are other photos available on the event webpage

Tell that to the Martyrs of Nagasaki.

When you get the chance, make sure you explain to these pro-gay marriage follks that our Catholic beliefs are not based out of hate and oppression towards homosexuals. We actually oppose gay marriage because we love gay people and we want all of them to go to heaven. We have the knowledge that the homosexual lifestyle is universally damaging to gay people (both in this life and the next) and it’s our desire to help save them since we are commanded to love our neighbour as ourselves. We would never desire to see our own souls in a state of grave danger, so how can we possibly stand by and watch gay people put their souls at risk without at least trying to help save them?

You complaint is based on a false assumption. People dislike homosexuality and homosexuals, and people dislike Christianity and Christians. There are haters on both sides of the divide. To pretend that everybody loves gay folks and only Christians are the objects of hate is silly.

Notwithstanding that, one the beliefs that you assert your right to showcase is the belief that homosexuality is wrong. Your right to showcase that belief is not in dispute, but if you do, you needn’t feign surprise that homosexuals (and their sympathizers) treat that as intolerance.

I kind of agree with Giants above.
There is both hatred and tolerance on both sides.

I think that a certain amount of the problem from the Christian side is that we (legislatively) have had it pretty much all our way for a good many years - centuries. It’s difficult to see this change but change it will (I’m afraid).

Will this change be to the good or the ill of the Church?
I believe yes it will, for it will do much to separate the wheat from the chaff. The (Catholic) Church will undoubtedly be smaller, but stronger and (hopefully) more pure.
Other church groups that try to adapt and accommodate, will go on for a while but will likely die out.

The change will be much worse for the world. The numbers of souls choosing the path to destruction is ever increasing. Sad but true, and until there is a sufficiently large disaster to bring them to there senses, the trend will continue.

All that said, the goal of the Christian should be to seek unity with other Christians. To ask the hard questions and seek common understandings and teachings. In this way more Christians will come nearer to God and His Holy Church, and we will be better able to present a clear and attractive alternative to the evil of the world.

God help us to grow more holy and to show your great and Loving heart to the world.

Peace

Look at the bright side: almost every company gives its employees Christmas Day off as a paid holiday (or at least pays double-time to employees who have to/volunteer to work). My daughter’s company even gives them Christmas Eve as a paid holiday. If I want to take time off for Hanukkah, Diwali, Vesak, or Eid, I have to burn vacation days.

Yes, I think Christians (paticularly Catholics) are being discriminated against but then I live in San Francisco!!! Several years ago the Jesuit high school my sons attended celebrated their 150th anniversary. There were signs all alongthe boulevard near the school announcing the anniversary – the school had a block party and served every kind of food imaginable – had a lot of entertainment - and many other things of interest – NOT one word in our local newspaper!!!
The next week the “gays” had their block party and one entire section of the Chronicle was devoted to this celebration – did I cancel my subscription – YES!!! Now I only get the paper on Sunday…

Thank you!
So sick of it here. Soon they will be able to marry, adopt and use artificial procreation. Seriously???
Now I don’t use religion when I talk with people. Because they always tell you its because you’re Catholic, Muslim or Jewish so you’re brainwashed…

I just use facts instead. Ex: I love my dog and I can tell he loves ( a lot ) too but I can’t marry him because he is a dog therefore the law should be changed so that I can marry him. It’s all about love isn’t?? 🙂
As for abortion since people do not seem to know the words abstinence and responsibility I just ask them if they would end the life of a newborn because he might have a miserable life or because the parents are not ready to be parents or whatever. They would say no then I would say: Yet you agree with abortion just because at 3 months old your a fetus isn’t a baby. Well a 3 months old fetus + 1 one day is still a fetus yet if someone has abortion at 3 months + 1 day its a crime. So really and truly whats the difference?

I find that when you tell one of Satan’s unknowing (or knowing for that matter) followers that you are telling them what you are telling them out of love - they get even madder.

You have to consider that they are developing in a culture of death and hate. When you present life and love to them they become confused and all the more enraged.
When they spend so long in the dark - they do not even recognize the light when they see it.

Love them and pray for them 😉

edit: for clarity - you are probably sitting next to some of these very people I am talking about at mass. Christianity is under attack from within - more now than ever from what I can see.

I don’t hate homosexuals, I just think the idea of gay marriage is wrong and is damaging to them.

At school, I was talking to this girl, who said she was a proud Catholic but yet she supported gay marriage. I told her that the bible forbids this, and she got a bit emotional (it wasn’t my intent to get her upset). And to my surprise, someone overheard our conversation and told me, and I quote: “Go shove your bible where the sun don’t shine”. I was simply stating my belief, and yet I get insulting remarks. I wan’t homosexuals to have a perfect life, and I really want to help them get out of their damaging ways.

Rejoice brother for you have been persecuted for righteousness sake.

Remember to respond in Love to such attacks.

I am purely being the devil’s advocate here, please do not assume I am comparing our beliefs with these awful beliefs, but…

“My religion says this, so it is ok for me to believe it” has been used to excuse some pretty awful things, so it is a pretty bad reason for excusing your beliefs.

People DID use the bible (specifically, the disbursement of humans after the tower of Babel) to excuse their fight against interracial marriage.

People HAVE claimed the “mark of cain” meant skin color, and therefore that black people are morally inferior to white people.

People HAVE used the bible, Leviticus in particular, to excuse any number of atrocities against homosexuals, our pretty much anyone they disagreed with

So yes, people have, MANY times, used the bible and religious belief to excuse hatred and discrimination. So your detractors do have a point, they think this is the same situation over again. They think we are using the bible as an excuse to cover hatred of homosexuals. And their argument is not a bad one, since this has been done countless times in the past.

So if you are being accused of hatred, don’t just respond “it’s my religion, I have no choice”. Give your reasons for why you believe the way you do. If those reasons are sound, as they should be, they will stand on their own merit.

I’m Catholic and I have never felt discriminated against.
Perhaps this should not be surprising, but it depends on other things, geography perhaps being the most important.

If one lives in an area where the KKK never existed, you would have missed out on that discrimination if you were old enough at the time or old enough to have known the residual effects. If you live in an area where Masonry does not encourage discrimination in favor of its own, then you have not.

If you live, as a liberal, in a place dominated by liberals, you are not likely to have noticed how anti-Christian the left is since you agree with it in all other ways. If you currently live in a place dominated by conservatives, you would not be discriminated against for being Catholic except perhaps in the most back woods kind of place and then only among those who have never known a Catholic.

And it would also depend on the Catholic context. If, say, you were a Catholic fully faithful to the teachings of the Church trying to get a job from Kathleen Sebelius, you would be discriminated against notwithstanding that she is Catholic. Probably not in the whole Obama administration, and probably not even if you were liberal in every way other than being a supporter of abortion.

We need to be more accepting of being “discriminated against”.

We are a minority in almost all western countries. These cultures are founded on liberal humanism and the Christian message is counter cultural and uncomfortable. Insofar as we opt out of what is seen by secular humanism - itself a faith absurdly supposing itself to be logical or reasonable - as creedal or dogmatic ( eg Choice on abortion ) we will be pilloried as outsiders and ignored. Insofar as we kow tow to those dogmas we will be accepted…the classic problem of liberal episcopalianism which is so acceptable as to be extinct.

Christianity is a counter cultural calling. That is the reality. Get used to it everyone.

Kanuckistani,

I agree with you about Christians being discriminated against. People who grew up athiest who have not studied Christianity get their views and beliefs about it from media and from people speaking about Christianity. It is a shame that those individuals do not seem to look at all of the good that Christians do for other Christians and also for other children of God, whether or not they believe in God. People find one negative thing, like the priests scandal, and then throw the baby out with the bathwater, ignoring all of the positives.

IMO, and I realize this may be against Church teachings, individuals speaking about their faith, etc should avoid pointing out what the bible has to say about practicing homosexuals, should also leave out of the convo their beliefs formed from the bible about homosexuality because IMO the reaction/effect of this always reinforces people being anti Christian. I think we would fair better if we left that to God unless someone else brings the subject up first.

I think there are things we can do to help, such as praying for peple who are against Christians and Christianity such as praying for them and when talking about our faith focusing the discussion on how our faith has helped us, our families, and our friends. I think we should take this approach when discussing our faith with non believers. I think people whould be more likely to convert or begin to have faith if we take this approach and avoid talking about what the bible has to say about homosexuality and our views on gay marriage and abortion. I think conversations on those topics are better to be left out of the initial conversations and only broached after several conversations on what our faith does for us. I think that most people have a tendency (I know I do) to ‘want to be right’ and can loose perspective about the best ways to promote Christianity and assist people in finding Christ as their lord and savior. I see it as similar to talking about some things in the old testament, i.e. an eye for an eye and believe that conversations about those topics will have the effect of either turning people off of Christianity or further reinforce their feeling that their perspective is ‘right’, making it less likely they will ever convert.

God Bless,
Bill

I am sorry I don’t agree that there is a lot of bashing and hatred towards Christians in the western world - I have seen plenty of Christian marches, and I myself have been on three large processions of the Blessed Sacrament this year through the streets of London, and they passed off without incident. In fact, there was even a round of applause by the onlookers when we sang the Salve Regina.
