ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT FROM ARMENIA (CNS) — Catholics and other Christians not only must apologize to the gay community, they must ask forgiveness of God for ways they have discriminated against homosexual persons or fostered hostility toward them, Pope Francis said.

“I think the church not only must say it is sorry to the gay person it has offended, but also to the poor, to exploited women” and anyone whom the church did not defend when it could, he told reporters June 26.

Spending close to an hour answering questions from reporters traveling with him, Pope Francis was asked to comment on remarks reportedly made a few days previously by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the German bishops’ conference, that the Catholic Church must apologize to gay people for contributing to their marginalization.

At the mention of the massacre in early June at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Pope Francis closed his eyes as if in pain and shook his head in dismay.

“The church must say it is sorry for not having behaved as it should many times, many times — when I say the ‘church,’ I mean we Christians because the church is holy; we are the sinners,” the pope said. “We Christians must say we are sorry.”

You mean like this?

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis says gays – and all the other people the church has marginalized, such as the poor and the exploited – deserve an apology.

Francis was asked Sunday en route home from Armenia if he agreed with one of his top advisers, German Cardinal Karl Marx, who told a conference in Dublin in the days after the deadly Orlando gay club attack that the church owes an apology to gays for having marginalized them.

Apologize to gays that we have offended with the truth? Pffff. What about an apology to the faithful who are feeling more and more marginalized in the Church? I know, I know, the Church has to get with the times. Hooey.

The Pope should just stop talking to the reporters. It seems that every time he does, he says something that’s able to be easily twisted to support evil. I think that we deserve an apology from the gays, not the other way around.

The pope emphasized the Church’s teaching as found in the Catechism:
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
If our actions are not in line with the Church’s teachings, and push people away from Christ, then yes, we owe them an apology. However, if we preach the truth with love and mercy, and that truth is something a person cannot accept, then I have done all I can do, and I have nothing to be sorry for.

The pope, yet once again, has proven himself to be Catholic!

To say that people struggling with homosexuality “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity” when they have just been condemned as “intrinsically disordered” is very disingenuous and dishonest. To call it love and mercy makes the situation even worse. It is this very hypocrisy that pushes people away from the Church.

But I know where it comes from and I sympathize with cardinal Reinhard Marx. Cardinal Marx once said:
Take the case of two homosexuals who have been living together for 35 years and taking care of each other, even in the last phases of their lives. How can I say that this has no value?
For cardinal Marx there is a very clear disconnect between what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says and what he sees in his archdiocese. The Church condemns homosexuality as a form of sin, while the cardinal sees that in reality it’s actually a form of love. This is not just a dilemma for the cardinal, but for many priests and lay catholics living in the West as well.

I also think cardinal Marx has often been dismissed too easily in conservative catholic media, without much regard for the struggle he faces in an increasingly secular Germany.

When I discriminate against gays, the poor, or the marginalized, then I will apologize.

No. He should NOT be quiet.
Bad things happen because people are quiet.
He should speak out. We have to live the Gospel. If he doesn’t promote Gospel values, you can expect more of the same awful things happening in our world.
We don’t support evil acts. We support people. And we hope to lead them to holiness.

This reminds me of some statement awhile back from the Pope about attending mass, and somehow, it got twisted around or misinterpreted, and everyone was thinking he said its perfectly fine to NOT attend mass anymore, you can worship God wherever you happen to be, within yourself…I could not believe how many people ‘Liked’ and shared this.

In this case, the damage was done, 1000s of people were under the impression the Vicar of Christ said its fine if you do not attend mass anymore.

The media are the ones to blame here, they are the ones twisting his statements around to better fit in with the popular secular world beliefs, but they are only the mouthpiece too, they have ‘people’ above them instructing them.

They will have to answer for this when they are judged though.

Of course, the apologists for the Pope are scrambling to their legs, trying to explain his statements again. The Pope can’t do anything wrong, according to you guys.

Thank God for the papal posse: youtube.com/watch?v=Y8_VBW0a6ow

I guess it’s all in the interpretation, isn’t it?

I’ve been reading America and Fr Jim Martin for their take on it.

Am I my brother’s keeper? I think so, for ALL our brothers and sisters. The Pope is not only right to speak out on this and other issues but he has an obligation to do so.

Or maybe stop flying on airplanes. That seems to be the time he gets into trouble.

I guess men, at least straight White men, have never been exploited and we don’t have to apologize to them. I certainly never hear of any sympathy for them. The way I learned history Christianity did more for exploited groups then any nation, philosophy or religion. And exploitation and being exploited wasn’t limited to any particular group.

From another article:
The questions is: if a person who has that condition, who has good will, and who looks for God, who are we to judge?"
This wasnt very helpful the last time.

This view is a perfect example of what’s wrong with society. People are not disordered, sinful acts are. The Church never calls people disordered. We are beginning to see a world where people are only identified by their sexuality, and therefore, to view a certain sexual act as sinful is considered “bigotry” and degrading. In reality, by entirely basing your identity as a human on your sexuality, you’re only degrading yourself.
