One social encyclical that pertains particularly to our culture is ’ Centesimus Annus’. The teaching reflects the duty of the state to be instead a servant of the people.

Another point of fact is that this world is comprised of many different cultures and ways of looking at things.

It has been catastrophic for many in third and fourth world countries when foreign industries have come in to reap from natural resources, but it has required the labor of natives, most oftentimes used for exploitation. Coming with that wave are also those called to serve the poor in the spirit of missionary. Likewise in these countries, there have been many social projects, education and health centers to develop peoples of these other countries to raise their own living standards and to connect with the global community.

But there are likewise massive numbers of peoples in these countries who cannot adopt foreign ways, and prefer the traditional agrarian lifestyle, as well as certain cultures where the men simply do not have the values to value, care, and provide for their women and children…It could be to the severity of climate with disease and continual climatic misfortunes such as floods, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes that weaken the determination of such people.

Subsequently, from the global perspective the issue of exploitation and helping the foreign poor can oftentimes be paternalistic at best. There is only so much very different cultures can do in making ‘things better’. It is highly complex and the ongoing problems never seem to be resolved.

So an economic system in one country is workable but to transfer it to another is not. And likewise, to bring the values of an agrarian society to ours which is more socialistic in nature, would also destroy the moral fabric of our people, just like it was doing in some European countries, and the healthcare system in Canada.

And these are issues Glenn Beck also is aware of. I think to boycott Glenn Beck is sophomoric.

The gospel is best lived out where we are, applying workable solutions to the people around us. Same overseas, it is better to honestly study foreign cultures and find solutions within them to help them…with also the knowledge we can learn from them.

A political and economical system wihtout God’s Law is worthless and bound to fail.

a government free from God cannot survive and be just. it is always bound to fail. capitalism has proving to be quite evil and the tendency is to slavery those who have not reached certain places of power by money.

Good point.

All aspects of society must be guided by moral values or it bears the consequences. And it is the responsibility of all moral persons to contribute to society, and not just put responsibility on a certain group of people.

There are non-affluent, simple people living in capitalistic societies who are very thankful they live in them because capitalistic societies do give them the right to privacy to choose a less materialistic, yet intelligent lifestyle. Work with people like this all the time.

In a socialist society, you are beholden to what the state wants you to believe in, you are allowed to go only so far in it. You live for the state. Catholicism condemns the types of socialism models that deny freedom of the person and their right to autonomy. It also condemns liberalism because then there is no absolute moral value, everything is relative.

I am boycotting him and posted on his Facebook entry why. I am boycotting him because of his statement concerning Islam.

There is an article out about a notable Wahabbist (the very fundamental form of Islam which is supporting the Jihadists worldwide), Prince Alwalweed is buying even more of Fox news, it quotes some things from some notable people on Fox news that I found appauling.

Fox news trashing Geert Wilders.

Krauthammer has also been sent letters for his truly ignorant statement about Islam too, here is one by Walid Shoebat.

Uh aren’t you guys/gals going alittle over board? And aren’t we supposed to love thy neighbor? Thats the second greatest commandment after loving thy God. Let the furor over Glen Beck go.

I dont watch him in the first place…not interested in either his views or opinions.

I prefer God’s.

If you look in the Old Testament, God showed the Jews how everything was supposed to work, from those that had to those that didn’t have. Also the Jews weren’t satisfied, they wanted a king just like the other nations. God warned them about it and you can see what happened to them. It always seems like man wants to do things his way. Like his plan is better then God’s. As you look around, you can see the results of man’s plan.

Amen to that. The Church, both individually and corporately, is called to love and serve its neighbor. Good Christians disagree on the best economic models that can be used toward this end. Some think capitalism, some think socialism. The virtues of any system can be debated outside the context of religion. To bring theological doctrine into the mix is an egregious confusion of the two kingdoms.
I agree. I believe in the separation of Church and State. I believe in serving Christ, which also means serving the poor and the oppressed; but not through attaching religion to Political Parties. You are right in saying “bringing theological doctrine into the mix is an egregious confusion of the two kingdoms.”
Grace & Peace!

I agree whole-heartedly. The whole debate between right and left is a distraction and is, fundamentally, diabolical–that is, it sows seeds of discord which can only end in violence. This is the way of anything that separates people into Us-Them groupings.

Moreover, it has often struck me that both the right and the left have a fundamental problem with perspective leading to a pernicious utopianism on either end–the right locating the utopia in an imagined past that it attempts to foist on the present, and the left in locating the utopia in an imagined progressive future by which it ignores the present entirely. Both are destructive.

Under the Mercy,
Mark

All is Grace and Mercy! Deo Gratias!
I agree. Well said.

Beck is, to put it kindly, off his rocker. If you listen to or watch either of his shows, you’ll see that he’s not exactly mentally stable.

He should use an Elmo :)…Have you seen those? We use them in the classroom now. They’re digital overhead projectors. Anything you set under the scanner shows up on the giant screen. Cool item but expensive. I agree with Beck probably 60% of the time. I am not one of those people that thinks the government should stay out of every single facet of our lives like Beck. And I also don’t distrust teachers to the degree he does and loath unions to that level. I think government should be minimized in some areas, not in others. I agree on much of what he says though, especially about culture and our social malaise. We’re a mess. I do question Beck’s judgment though because he was a Catholic turned Mormon. Catholic turned Protestant is one thing, turned Mormon or J-Dub I seriously question someone’s thinking process. Believing in the planet Kolob, spirit babies, bronze plates in Palmyra, NY left by angels, Jesus preaching to Indians, secret robes, sealing ceremonies, Joseph Smith, gotta wonder there…

I just don’t tend to trust extremists of either party. I by nature can’t stand both parties. Having parties is really un-American to begin with. George Washington was repulsed by them. We’d do well to listen to GW not GB.😛
I agree with Beck about 99% of the time. The 1% I don’t is anytime he says anything about religion lol.

A chalkboard? Well, if he used PowerPoint, he’d look too much like a non-denominational megachurch pastor lol.

He went the route of the pick yourself up by your own bootstraps version of religion. Which is precisely what Mormonism is; Pelagianism, largely. The perfect American religion. Beck’s situation was perfect for that kind of worldview… if he truly knew what grace was…

I used to be a big fan of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and all the rest.

Now, since the only issue that really matters to me is killing babies, I do still like them to some extent. I do realize that on most of the other less important stuff you can make good cases either way.

For example I have no idea whether God approves or disapproves of ObamaCare outside of funding killing babies. Now I am naturally skeptical of governmental power, but I admit I might be wrong here.

But since Glenn and I are in agreement on funding killing babies, he is still good.

This is part of Beck’s quotation:

“I’m begging you, your right to religion and freedom to exercise religion and read all of the passages of the Bible as you want to read them and as your church wants to preach them . . . are going to come under the ropes in the next year. If it lasts that long it will be the next year. I beg you, look for the words ‘social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!”

Personally, I believe all Catholics should be offended by Glenn Beck’s remarks and should boycott his show. He’s an anti-Christ and a false prophet misleading many good people into thinking that they should live in fear. Fear of what? Fear that President Obama is planning a secret Communist world order…fear of everything that has to do with our government helping people with unemployment benefits or health care or social programs. I think his words are very offensive to those of us who believe that Jesus would want us to give to the poor and needy…and to believe in social justice…which is very much the central theme in the Bible…over 2000 verses are given to promote justice…and central to the teachings of the Catholic church.
Glenn Beck is all about greed and fear. This is a big deal…when our religion is insulted. It’s time to boycott his show and stand up for our faith. Who will you serve? Our Lord or someone who tells you that giving to the vulnerable and poor will lead to Communism and Natzism? As for me and my family…we will serve the Lord and speak out against Beck at every chance.

The anti-christ uses a chalkboard? I always figured he’d be more high tech. Plus I always figured the anti-christ would be more pro-Stalinist and not a Mormon either…;)😛

Anna, although i respect the views of you all, i must say that the mentality of some is that the government must be of anti Christ. in the past was not so. since the time of protestants revoke, the idea is that government must not be involved in the Church. the result of that is a government of the unbelievers. we see the fruits of this today.

the reason for the separation of state and Church is because of divisions among Christians. protestants are afraid that governments may favor Catholicism over theirs. the results of this is sad. what we have is government taht cannot enforce the Laws of God.

Well, Beck isn’t totally wrong.

“Economic Justice” is a slogan of Communism. Have we forgotten about Karl Marx and his notion of the “haves” and the “have nots?” The only way for the “have nots” to overcome their position is to revolt and overthrow the “haves.”

“Equality” can only exist in Communism. Anyone who truly understands Capitalism, Socialism, or for that matter, ANY formal and organized legal system, would know that these three things cannot produce equality. In fact, by their very nature, capitalism, socialism and law produce, promote, and require inequality if they are to continue to exist.

The only way to view people who want “total equality” is as anarchists. These people cannot, under any circumstances, achieve a world of “equality” AND leave a standing, formal legal system in their wake.

Why? Sociologists (and others) have identified three “dysfunctions of law.” The first is that law (of all types) produces inequality, simple huh? The second is that law imposes the morality of the majority upon the minority, that doesn’t sound very “equal” to me. The third is just that law makes things more complicated then they should be, which is irrelevant to this conversation.

So you see, when an ecclesial body begins to harp about “economic equality,” the only thing they can be logically be pursuing is communism, as nothing else can allow for “equality.”

Don’t count Beck out just yet.
Where he goes wrong is thinking anyone should leave their church over political issues.

Thank you for your suggestion but I will always follow Christ first.
To follow Christ is to follow His Church. There are many writings starting with Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII 1891 that really started the current “social teaching” of the Church. He and his successors spoke of the evils of Marxism, communism, socialism and for that matter unbridled capitalism. All of these have evil attributes. I watch and listen to Glenn Beck from time to time and I think this is what he was referring to. I don’t think he advocates the abuse of the impoverished.

I guess I am one who leans right on most things like pro-life issues. I sometimes get frustrated by clergy with agendas, whether it be a left or right agenda. For instance, I had one of my instructors, a Deacon who was teaching us a clinical pastoral course, who stated to the class the Terry Shiavo case was handled correctly because it cost too much money to keep her alive. That my friends is scary to the left!!!

The Church is the middle; abortion is intrinsically evil and always wrong. This is the stance by the Church this is the middle ground. Pro-choice it out of the scope to the left, and violence against abortion enablers is out of bounds right.

We do have an obligation to feed the hungry and clothe the naked and take care of the sick, ect. These are our obligations. It is not our obligation to provide a house for free to everyone, or health insurance for free to everyone. We have the obligation, and in most cases I feel we do, to provide health care not health insurance.

If the USA keeps on the track we are currently on, we will all be the impoverished and no one will be able to afford health care.

I believe Glenn Beck is right on many topics, a little too far right on occasion but he is not as evil as many portray him to be.

The Roman Catholic social justice doctrine is soley drawn from the Gospels. We are to have preferential treatment for the poor.

Systems can be based on sin. Those that deprive people of just wages and conditions, deny the right of privacy and the right to choose their vocation or work for life, who persecute and marginalize religion, systems that prevent people from developing and reaping – within reason – the fruit of their labors, or unjust benefits to corrupt groups who in turn stereotype responsible and hard working people as bad, – a form of class warfare – these are systems of sin.

The best economic system according to John Paul II was the free market in a democratic society, but a market serving the needs of its society. That is why “Centisimus Annus” is a good read for Western societies.

It’s the businessman’s religion par excellence. If you’re a really good Mormon, you can be promoted and become God on another world; sort of like getting your own franchise!
