The mail delivered a chaplet I ordered on Etsy today. With my girl’s brain stem tumours currently presenting a very precarious situation, my heart breaks over and over all day, every day. I have brain tumours (5) as well as many others elsewhere, I’ve lost count of the surgeries and treatments and hospitalisations I’ve endured for brain and spinal cord tumours and pancreatic cancer. I watched my beloved dad die from a brain stem tumour (Dad died on my daughter’s fifth birthday, twelve years ago. My dad ADORED my girl (and her siblings) and she was telling me today she feels a special connection with my dad, having the same birth and death date, suffering from a debilitating brain stem tumour, and other things that have created a special bond). But all of that suffering didn’t remotely prepare me for the angst of watch my child suffer from a disease I passed along to her. It is a unique sorrow to watch your child endure unrelenting suffering. In my 8/9 years as a Catholic, I’ve only ever consistently prayed the rosary and the chaplet of divine mercy, with some minor attention to the stations of the cross. But the week before my daughter’s situation turned dire, I stumbled upon a book on the seven sorrows of Mary. When her paediatrician told us to head to the ER (that was the quickest way to admission), as I ran around the house trying to remember all I needed to pack, I remembered the book and took it along. The subject always resonated with me but not with the impact it does now. Thus, I went to Etsy to find the Seven Sorrows chaplet.
Not that anyone needed that long story but I received the chaplet today and like all of my Etsy purchases, it is a stunning work of great craftsmanship. I make rosaries myself and to do it well, it requires great patience, attention to minute details, and the ability to curate the best combination of beads/stones, findings, and medals/centres. I am so pleased with my purchase. Also, as an artist myself (mixed media painting, portraiture, art journalism) I love supporting true craftsmanship of independent artisans. I’ve also bought all of my veils and a few hats on Etsy.
