Christmas Eve tonite…starting at 6 pm. A little early for my preference. But not much I can do aobut it. Got to cook tomorrow!! 🙂

More Latinization Constantine. Traditionally Pascha is the one time out of the year that Liturgy is said at midnight. Christmas Liturgy at midnight is another way we Eastern Christians have aped the Latins.

Properly tonight one should celebrate Great Compline together with Mattins of Christmas and the first hour, with Divine Liturgy served in the morning.
well excuuuuse me

Hey I have a question… since Christmas falls on a Saturday, does the Christmas Mass on Saturday fulfill the obligation like the typical Saturday vigil Mass, or is it considered totally separate meaning that this Sunday’s Mass is a completely distinct obligation? I think it’s the latter but I’m not really sure.

There are other threads with people asking this question - but the answer is generally that you can’t meet 2 obligations (Christmas and Sunday) with one Mass. You can meet your Christmas obligation from 4 pm (generally) Christmas Eve until midnight the night of Christmas Day, and your Sunday obligation from 4 pm Christmas Day until midnight Sunday night. So the “obligation periods” do overlap but you can’t go to one Mass to count for both obligations. I think this is why a lot of parishes aren’t having any Masses at all on Christmas Day in the evening - to avoid confusion.

Also - to meet your obligation you have to go to Mass during the specified time, not to a particular Mass. So if you went to the Christmas Vigil Mass Friday evening, and then to a Christmas Day Mass after 4 pm on Saturday/Christmas Day, that second one would count for your Sunday obligation even though it’s not the prayers and readings of the Mass for Sunday.

Okay, thanks a lot for clearing that up. It was these details about the significance of times vs. “readings” that were especially tripping me up here. 🙂

Midnight Mass for me tonight. It is almost nine o’clock so have a little while to go before I leave.
Merry Christmas.

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost Christmas once again. Which Mass will you be attending this year? I have to serve at the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Christmas Day; however, I may go to Midnight Mass as well tomorrow night because it’s such a beautiful Mass. Which mass will you be attending this year?
**We attended the Vigil Mass this evening and will go to the noon mass tomorrow morning…

MIDNIGHT MASS!!! (at our local OF parish) Its just too far to drive to Seattle for an EF midnight Mass and then drive home again (safely).

Our OF parish is really doing the midnight Mass with many of the old traditions. The priest is singing the Mass, there will be at least 5 servers, ordinaries will be in latin. Hymns will be in latin.

Prior to Mass there will be singing of carols.

Brick by brick.
**Our parish priest always sings the mass, we always have a deacon…we always 5 or more servers. It’s a big parish…

Just got back from Midnight Mass at our parish and it was one of the most beautiful ones yet! We have an electronic bell carillon, and at the beginning of Mass, they played the three minute peal tape four times. I bet the neighbors didn’t appreciate that, haha. Anyways, the Mass was beautiful with all the carols and Father’s homily was excellent. Merry Christmas to all!

Now, all I need to do is go to bed so I can wake up at 6:30 to get ready for the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

I did go to the Midnight Mass and lectored as planned, and it was really beautiful. But I also ended up going to the Mass of Christmas Day at 10 am, and server - I was the only server and we did everything, so I was crucifer, thurifer, altar server, bells, paten, book, etc. Very busy but it was great. And I got to wear a cassock and surplice for the first time!

Well, it’s no longer future tense. We went to the Midnight Mass here. Due to the horrific nature of the rest of the stuff going on, I can’t post plans, only report things after it’s been done. Our Midnight Mass functionally starts at 11:30 with the choir concert (that is to say, it’s pretty awkward to arrive during the concert and hard to find a seat due to the crowd if you tried to skip the concert), although the Mass does start at midnight. My three sons served, my daughter sat with me (which does help on that aforementioned seating issue, except it’s crowded up there too with both priests and three deacons present at the same Mass).

Merry Christmas!
