Did they know that Christopher Columbus was Italian and not Spanish?
When I did my own family geneaology, I was able to go back to at least 1573. However, the baptisms were entered into the parish’s Baptismal book. There were no ‘certificates’ as such, mostly just a ledger.
I don’t know where this A.C.E. organization gets its material but it is simply wrong. The Provincial archive in Genoa has a
Sala Colombiana, a small room that holds many original Columbus family documents. They have survived the events of five centuries, including Louis XIV’s 1684 naval bombardment of Genoa. More than 60 documents recount the story of the Columbus family, beginning with the youth of Domenico Colombo. He was apprenticed to a Flemish weaver at the age of 11 and become a master weaver. Domenico Colombo married Susanna Fontanarossa. Their first child was Cristoforo, in 1451; later came Giovanni Pellegrino, Bartolomeo, Giacomo, and daughter Bianchinetta.
Christopher worked with his father. He first appears in the notarial record of September 1470. By 1472 Columbus had learned his father’s trade, for in that year he is called LANAIOLO, a worker in wool. It is not clear when he became a sailor, but by 1479 he was living in Portugal. We know this because of a 1479 lawsuit stating that Christopher Columbus a Genoese citizen residing in Portugal, was representing Genoese merchants in this transaction. We also know that Christopher Columbus donated one-tenth of his income from his discovery of the Americas to the Bank of San Giorgio in Genoa for the relief of taxation on foods.
There is a faction of Protestant “revisional history” which attempts to portray the Church in every possible evil light, which is evil in itself. And much of the information is wrong. Columbus’s baptism was in the church of Santa Margarita. How A.C.E. ever got it so wrong is beyond me. Then again, it’s agenda is obvious.
