Christopher West ends sabbatical, says he will respond to critics

Exton, Pa., Sep 8, 2010 / 07:03 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Author and speaker Christopher West has ended his six-month sabbatical, saying he has come to see “a need for greater balance in my life.” He reported that he will address critics of his interpretation of John Paul II’s theology of the body, adding that some have been helpful while others continue to “misunderstand or misrepresent” his work.

It’s hard to take Christopher West too seriously anymore. The more I read about him, and the more videos I watch of him, the more I am annoyed by his constant comparison of all things Catholic to sex.

He compares the joys of heaven to the climax of sexual relations, and refers to sex itself as a sacrament. I never realized there were 8.

He also seems to think that humanity can somehow go back to the days of old, when Adam and Eve were naked in the garden, and have no problem with that. The fact is due to original sin, we would be unable to function with pure minds and intentions in a society where everyone was naked.

I’ve never seen Christopher West refer to sex as a sacrament. Do you have a quote?

No, sex is part of the Sacrament of matrimony. Heaven is not a climax, but intercourse allows us to enter into the holiness of God’s creative powers. Father Corapi says the same thing.

Sex is holy. Only it’s been defiled by promiscuity, contraception, adultery, pornography, etc.etc.etc etc…😦

We forget that Adam and Eve were husband and wife…should husband and wife feel shame at their nudity? Mr. West does not advocate public nudity.

I’m not the biggest Christopher West defender. I’ll leave that to those more informed than I but I have seen a lot of the above. I think we need to be careful and only quote him directly if we are going criticize his work.

I may have been wrong in that, but it’s rather difficult to tell when he writes such things as this: “Like all sacramental realities, if sexual union (as the consummate expression of the sacrament of marriage) is truly to communicate God’s life and love, then it must accurately symbolize it.”

Is he saying that sex is a sacrament? Sacramental? What’s the difference between a sacrament and a sacramental reality? Btw this is not the quote I was referring too, I was referring to something he said in a letter, but I think I missed a word. Regardless, it’s this kind of ambiguous wording that annoys me.

He does refer to the body as a sacrament though. He says “with a small s, not like one of the 7 Sacraments”, but I’m fairly certain we cannot call the body a sacrament at all.
