I was checking my email, when I found this troubling article:

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100310/ap_on_re_eu/eu_germany_church_abuse

I was shaken by reading it and the comments that followed. I am terribly worried. I am worried for the Pope, his brother and the Church. The claim is that it is possible that the Pope and his brother knew about the scandals and did nothing. They are beginning an investigation. This abuse scandal threatens to destroy the Church. Does anyone else know about this?

Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid;” (Mt 28:10)

Don’t worry! The greatest evil powers over the past 2000 years, guided by the Devil, from the Roman Empire to Chinese & Soviet Communism have not destroyed the Church!

The Yahoo article is the typical smear piece. They put “ABUSE” in the headline & then say the Pope’s brother allegedly “slapped” kids in the early 60’s?

Those of us who grew up in the early 60’s, when common discipline was a “Paddling” by the principal or the nuns rapping your knuckles with a metal ruler when you were unruly, know this is today’s PC Police calling spanking your child in the middle of a tantrum “Child Abuse.”
**
T
he article goes on to say; “There is certainly the suspicion that there are some out there out to damage the church and the pope,”
**
The Church will be fine; Jesus taught us that the Devil will never prevail, despite human sinners in the Church!

**“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.” (Mt 16:18)
**
Jesus has already won the battle, no matter what sins we humans commit.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

The abuse scandals will not destroy the Church, no matter what allegations are made, what comes to light or what other awfulness might happen at some point in the future. It will be affected in ways we can’t foresee, but it won’t be destroyed.

some of our bishops have already acknowledged that mistakes were made in how they handled abuse. They have asked for forgiveness.–Two thoughts:
  1. As a survivor of abuse-not by a priest thank God- I have zero tolerance for abusers. I use to feel this way about those who either protected them or turned the other way. However, if I call myself Christian I must forgive or at least pray for the desire to forgive. And so, yes ; I have forgiven my abuser. And I have forgiven those bishops who have sincerely asked for it.
  2. Has the Church- bishops, priests, religious, and laity, done anything different than my own family? or other families who ignore, or deny that the abuse happened? If it is a family that refuses to do anything about it, secular experts are often quick to point out that abuse in a family by one member to another does harm to the whole family unit. A mother who allows abuse to continue, we are often reminded that she did the best she could with what she had. After all what woman could possibly imagine that her husband could do such a thing. Yes eventually she is held accountable to protect her kids (maybe). But the world sympathizes and forgives(excuses?)
But if it is members of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the sharks circle.

As mentioned in an earlier post, scandal and attack are nothing new to our Church. We will survive as we have for more than 2000 yrs. Why? Because Jesus said so!

Its also interesting how nuns with rulers are talked about as such a terrible thing. But we talk with a sense of nostalgia about every neighbor that use to whip our butts before we got home to get one from momma when we’d misbehave as kids.

Yes, the Church has done so many wonderful things for this world- and some body doesn’t like it!!

Thank you all for your encouraging words. There are so many people who hate the Church and the Pope. I pray for the victims of abuse and for the Church.

Being a survivor of abuse as a child, and also the cover of of it, let me say it is time for the church to stand up and be open and above board about all this sickness. If everyone was open all this would not be the scandel it is. The abuse is sickening and the cover up is as bad!!!

Tweetymom, I don’t know the circumstances but I am so saddened to hear this and I pray for you. Irregardless of where abuse occurs it is very sad. I agree the scandal was made worse. The cover up by the hierachy makes it difficult for people to believe a hierarchy supposedly appointed by Christ would not know to protect children at all times. And not move priests from parish to parish, hiding the truth, protecting them rather an innocent child. 😦 God bless you and peace.

But if it is members of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the sharks circle.

The reason they circle is that no other religion or secular group makes the claims the Church makes. Or has as stiff rules as others. Examples:
  1. Other churches are not Churches, but ecclessial communities.
  2. Other churches may believe in the real presence, but God is not really present because no priest was present to say the right words.
I could go on. I am a loyal Catholic, but if you are gong to “talk the talk” you had better
“walk the walk”. When you do the former, but not the latter, you can bet that people will pounced.

It’s like the defensive end who does his dance and points to himself when he makes a tackle. But doesn’t do his celebratory dance when someone runs over him.

The Church should be held to a higher standard.

Let’s face it, it was wrong of the Bishops to just move priests that were commiting these aweful sins from parish to parish. It’s ridiculous that all these countries are saying that they had priests molesting children. I get so angry everytime I hear about this because these Men consecrate bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to know that they abuse that role in doing perverted acts makes me sick to my stomach.

Amen to all you say. Angry is not the word for it. And all I hear is that you have to have Holy hands to give communion.

…talk about a non sequitur. 😛

Do you really hear the argument against the use of EMHCs in response to the abuse scandal? That is strange.

Yes I do hear.
How does that conversation go, exactly? Does it consist of the individual responding to your comment about the scandals, or is it you using the scandals as a defense for EMHCs?

I’m guessing the latter.

Don’t get me wrong. I am an EMHC. Though I would prefer a return to altar rails and distribution of the Holy Sacrament by priests and deacons, I do know that the Church clearly allows EMHCs in the GIRM.

What I don’t see the connection between the abuse scandal and communion. You aren’t claiming that Holy Orders are meaningless, are you?

Well you guessed wrong on both 🤷

Hmmm wrong again
I asked you for details, and you aren’t providing them. If you won’t or can’t, then one can conclude it was a non sequitur. If you wish to enlighten me with more than one-liners, feel free. If not, then I will just look forward to your next meaningless “Amen to that!” post and laugh as usual.

Or I could laugh at someof your most wonderful posts, Awhile back a poster said that ordinary people were not qualified to handle communion, because they were not Holy enough. Now my answer to that is Are Priests who molest and Bishops who cover up more holy?

I was raped by two priests. one when I was 7 and the other one when I was 12. I am female. And I totally agree with you.

Well, by the fact that they received Holy Orders, yes, they are “more holy.” If you mean sinless, then no, they are not. When they act in persona Christi, they are taking the place of Christ. You and I, as lay persons, are not capable of acting in persona Christi.

This is why I asked if you were claiming that Holy Orders are meaningless.

Also, I would note that you said I “guessed wrong” about you using the scandals as a defense for EMHCs; however, that is exactly what you just posted as I bolded above. Apparently, I guessed right.
