Church Attire: Shorts

I personally have no problem with shorts at Mass as long as they reach at least mid-thigh and aren’t too tight. I frequently see people of all ages at Mass wearing baggy shorts or jams, especially on weekdays, and I do too. Some of the teenage girls’ shorts seem a little revealing sometimes, but I leave that to their parents and just be glad they are at Mass.

There is one chapel I’ve seen with a “no shorts” sign and as I’ve posted before, that’s because the chapel leans towards traditional and the neighborhood where it’s located leans towards stretch or booty shorts.

When I lived in New Hampshire I avoided wearing shorts to Mass. Now living in Tennessee right on the Georgia border… it gets hot. HOT. So it can depend upon climate. We don’t want people passing out from heat stroke.

Though it depends upon other factors. I try to dress nice. On a standard, Sunday morning I have certain criteria for what I wear. However, if for whatever reason I can’t meet those standards, am travelling, have to come from somewhere else, or any number of other factors, I’m not going to let wardrobe keep me from going.

Wish I could “like” this 100 times.

If people want to impose personal standards on their own clothing and that of their children, that’s great, it’s their choice. My mother had certain rules for what I wore to church growing up.

If other adults have a different set of rules for them and their kids, I don’t mind as long as they are decently covered and aren’t wearing anything clearly vulgar, like a cleavage-baring top or a T-shirt with naked women and swear words on it.

At one time, churches did not have air conditioning. But that was then. We should dress in proper attire.

Nonsense. You cannot generalise like that. I live in the Philippines and I can tell you almost no Churches in this country have aircon. You sit in 35 C temperatures with some fans if you are lucky!

I’ll point out that they also wore more (to our eyes) formal clothing to sports events and other things. So what they’re wearing in those pictures was more casual than it is for us.
 
Sorry you have no A/C there, but dressing in a T-shirt and shorts is just not appropriate, in my humble opinion.
Feel free to dress as you like. But I have never and will never attend Mass dressed down. Mass in a solemn occasion. It is the most special event that want can attend. We are going to worship and to praise God. We are going to receive the Lord into our bodies through Holy Communion.
It is about honoring God, not about dressing comfortably.

Which do you think God prefers? That we attend Mass to worship him or be nicely dressed??
 
I think God want us to do both. Not either or.
If your best clothes are rags, then wear them proudly.
But do not dress in shorts just because the weather is hot and humid.
We are at Mass to worship God. To honor God.
We honor God by dressing appropriately.
If we must experience some discomfort in the process, so be it.
 
We have a free will.
I believe that we should honor God by dressing in nice clothing.
But others will do what they want. What I told a previous poster what that they can dress how they wish. I plan to dress up.
That’s how it is. Sorry for any confusion.

Many churches even in USA now, today, do not have air conditioning. i was in one for Mass last week.

Many others which do have air conditioning are older buildings and the AC does not work like it would in a new building.

However, my opinion is that casual shorts that aren’t revealing are fine at Mass, unless the particular church has specifically forbidden them. You are entitled to your opinion and to wear what you like.

Choosing the “other” reply sign prevents someone from feeling they are being responded to personally. In this case I am choosing to return to Gertabelle. If I didn’t want to seem so direct I try to remember to choose the “reply” offered lower down on page.

Yes, definitely agree. My biggest concern is please cover up so you are not immodest and do not wear something vulgar ,otherwise, I do not think about peoples clothing one way or another, unless their casual dress would be to the point of showing a great lack of care or concern for where they are. Then I would find that kind of sad.
