Church changed Sabbath to Sunday?

Did the Catholic Church change the Sabbath to Sunday?

I have a pamphlet given from a Seventh-day Adventist called “Rome’s Challenge: Why do Protestants Kepp Sunday?” It’s a reprint of various articles from the Catholic Mirror, Sep. 2, 1893. It’s basically a challenge that this publication gave to Sunday-keeping Protestants: why do they keep Sunday if they deny the authority of the Catholic Church?

One of the essential quotes is as follows:

“The Catholic Church for over one thousand years before the existence of a Protestant, by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday.”

My question is this: is this quote actually heresy? If so, what is the correct reason? If not, how can I defend this statement to a SDA?

Thanks, but I’ve already read those. The first one provides quotes by the Church Fathers, but remember, to many Protestants, including SDAs, the Church Fathers do not matter. Also, that page doesn’t answer my question: if the Church didn’t change it, who did?
 
I guess a good question is: Does the Church have the authority to change the day of worship.

I think the answer is three fold.
  1. The Church didn’t change the Sabbath. It is just no longer binding in the fulfilled Covenant.
    2)The Church established Sunday (the Day of the Lord) as the primary day of worship due to the Resurrection
    3)We observe this day of worship much like the Sabbath with no menial labor etc.

Since I will undoubtedly be questioned this, I need to know:

Why is the Sabbath no longer binding in the fulfilled Covenant?

A SDA will continuously refer to the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments Do say to keep the Sabbath holy. Is the Lord’s Day the same as the Sabbath? Why or why not? I plan on engaging in a deep debate soon. Help me out here!
 
Also remember: the Sabbath is the heart and soul of the SDA denomination’s very existence. It takes a very long, concise, hard-hitting answer to debunk their claims. But if I can do it, I might possibly win over a soul or two (through the Holy Spirit.)
 
Might I also add that I live in a SDA household, so all this help is very essential and important to me.

Sorry for just posting links. I’m not too well versed in SDA lore, but I’ll try to learn some more stuff by tomorrow.

St. Justin Martyr, in his First Apology wrote:

“And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits: then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things… But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, amde the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples, He taught them these things…”

It’s from Chapter 67 of the First Apology.
 
As for the quote from my original post, I need to know precisely: was that quote heresy or not?
 
Well, it depends on what they mean by “the day.” The Church didn’t change the Sabbath, though it did establish the day of worship (the Lord’s Day). The Church has never claimed to have changed the Sabbath

It is not heresy to establish a day of worship. Were the Jews wrong to establish their various feasts and times of worship?

In the Old Testament, covenants were family agreements in which the parties agreed to uphold the terms of the agreement under penalty of death. God made a covenant with the Israelites through Abraham. Since they were not faithful to it very long, one party had to die. Jesus(God) died, releasing us from the old covenant, which was replaced with the new covenant.
 
Yeah, I believe they say that the Church never existed before constantine so its a little tough to argue with their falsified logic.
 
Thanks. I’ve been trying to learn more about the SDA church, since last summer, they did a mass mailing to my neighborhood. They have a church right in the area too. I took them up on the offer to get the book, “The Great Controversy” for free. Very anti-Catholic literature. I’ve been wanting to go through it and refute it point by point, but I’m such a scatterbrain that I’ll do it for a week and forget about it for another two or three while working on something else.
