I don’t think it. will ever really go away.To say its a Catholic problem or its owned by any segment of society only serves as cover for abusers. Recognize it forwhat it is edudcate the children and people and we canreduce it .In the John Jay report I believe in a 50 year period there were 1500 Catholic priests accused. Of that 51% of them had one complaint.So it only takes a very small number of serial abusers to do so much damage
I think the Bishops were ignorant not of the crimes but how to handle them. Hasn’t this been the norm for society
Look a Penn State or for that matter mothers who turn a blind eye when there daughters are being abused.
I ’ m not condemning anyone but this denial is what the abusers depends on.
We as Catholics can’t change the past but do have some control of the future.I recommend everyone read the original report.
PS. Didn’t t the report say 3 priests were cleared. I guessfalseaccusations aren’t worth commenting on.

You can be rest assured there weren’t 650,000 cases reported in the USA, or the rest of the world, in the 1970’s. I’d be surprised if the number reached 1000, if any at all - as child abuse was thought to be a rare occurrence, no-one reported it (i.e. children had no voice in society, no helplines, no support), and it was hushed up and brushed under the carpet. However, I am certain that child abuse was still as rife in the '70’s as it is now.

I agree it was under reported in the past.
My police officer son claims there are 10 unreported for each reported case. I don’t know how you can prove that.
I agree some of what is considered abuse now certainly was overlooked.When I went to public school the first grade teacher would fondle the boys ears. She did this for 40 years. Everyone was aware of it in fact my older brother warned me before my first day of school.
 
Every family has its internal struggles. There is not one family I can name, whos children can go back even one generation without finding imperfect people living imperfect lives. Yet God loves all of them. Not their sins. It seems to me that our Catholic family is much, much larger and is no different. Would I have a hard time turning my brother/sister over to police even if I knew it must be done? absolutely! I am not perfect either it seems. 🙂

Yes, I understand and I agree with you, my point was referring to the fact that in the 1970’s when the scandals mostly occurred, child abuse cases were practically unheard off, no cases were reported and hence no-one, that includes the church who would also have taken secular legal advice regarding the situation, knew how to deal with it properly.
 
Just to bring us back to the topic - the thread title is wrong. None of the priests was defrocked. As the article said:
Those priests found unsuitable “will have no public ministry in the Archdiocese,” Chaput said Friday. If they do not appeal, or appeal unsuccessfully, he said, “they could be laicized (removed from the clerical state), live under some supervision, or live a life of prayer and penance.”
