GOD forgives sins. 1 John 1:9 states: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Neither the church, the priest or anyone else can forgive our sins, only God can do that. The best part is that He then forgets our sins. Isaiah 43:25 states: “I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” The Bible is very clear on the subject. We need to confess our sins to God, repent of them and go forward.
PIGTOWN, Yes true in order for Jesus Christ to forgive us of our sins we must go to his Church the Apostles and to their successors for are sins to be forgiven or retained…

Pigtown, yes you are wrong we must go to the church and to the priests who are the successors of the apostles for this is the only way to truly know if our sins are forgiven or if they are retained. Read Below.

(John 20:22,23) When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. 23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

The above bible verse Jesus Christ want us to go to his church. Can you utter words to baptize yourself or do you need a priest? Pigtown did you baptize yourself? OF COURSE NOT! well that also goes for confessing our sin we need a priest.

Pigtown, when you go directly to Jesus Christ to confess your sins that you have committed do hear Jesus Say to you your sins our forgiven? Or maybe Jesus Christ has not forgiven you but retained your sins how would you ever know?

Truth is that is why Jesus Christ Left his Church in order for us to know if we have been truly forgiven or our sins or if our sins have been retained and (John 20: 22, 23) proves it!

Jesus Christ Himself is the head of the Church He founded, the “Head of His Body”, Eph 1:22. That is about as authoritative as can be attained.

Jesus Christ made sure that His Church was worthy of the authority which He gave to it. He made sure His Church was spotless, “In order that He might present to Himself to the Church in all her glory, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she might be holy and without blemish,” Eph 5:27. He made sure His Church was worthy to be called the “House of GOD”, and the “Pillar of Truth”, “…how to conduct yourself in the House of GOD, which is the Church of the living GOD, the pillar and mainstay of the truth,” 1Tim 3:15.

James 5:15 is talking about the sick person to confess their sins so that they may be healed. It is called the prayer of faith. No one can forgive sins unless they have been sinned against. No person or church has that right to forgive a person of their sins
You are contradicting yourself, freedom. First you say that one has a right to forgive sins if they are the one sinned against, then you say “no person…has that right to forgive a person of their sins”.

I am curious what you think this passage means:

John 20:22-23
2 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

=Soutane;5397438]Because it conflicts with their personal and oh so fallible interpretation of Sacred Scripture(or,rather, their favorite preacher-of-the-moment’s personal and fallible interpretation of same:D)
Now, does that sound like anything I’ve ever said?:nope::hmmm:🙂
“Let them be One”,indeed.
Agreed! 👍

I could be wrong, but here’s what came to my mind regarding the Church forgiving sins:

The Catholic Church today is a far cry different from the Church of 500+ years ago. You have to realize that Protestant theology came from a reaction against the historical abuses perpetrated by the Church. Back then, forgiveness was used as a method of control and authority. When people would speak out against various abuses of power, they were met with threats of withholding absolution (and even excommunication). So naturally, Protestants developed a theology that didn’t require them to go through a priest. I’m not saying that it’s right or wrong. But I am saying that the idea is born out of a spirit of “Protest,” hence the name.

The Catholic Church teaches that the church has been given the power to forgive sins on God’s behalf. Protestant teachers have rejected this doctrine but there are Biblical passages which support the Catholic view.
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. (Acts 7:60)

Stephen prays that God will forgive their sins. We should not forget that Stephen was ordained as a deacon.

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:15)

The person’s sins are forgiven by the prayers of the presbyters. This doesn’t fit Protestant theology and doctrine at all.
YOUR THINKING PLEASE.
Mr. Pick,

Your Bible proof text’s are, as they say “wafer thin”. Seriously, you should consider a lawsuit against the school you attended and your teachers. They seem to by guilty of malpractice.

Jon Hus, Jon thank you for showing YOUR ignorance of the Cathloic Chruch after 500 years you still can;t get it right, well it did take the CC almost 2000 years to get it right .
We both know that prostant sill do NOT have Apostolis Succession, you do know what prostant Apostolis Succession is right, well come to think of it I bet you not not.
Let me say Thank You for your kind words, when a prostestant is bashing a Cathloic about a bible verse it is telling me they do not know what they are talking about so let me say thank you again.
Do you remember when Jesus stop and breath on the Apostolis.
KEEP READING A BIBLE AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU.BUT GET ALL THE BOOKS ,YOU ARE SHORT BOOKs, WITH THE BIBLE YOU ARE NOW READING,Have a great night…Stay around we need peolpe like you,you make us all look good.
Sorry for the bad grammar and the misspelled words/dont have time to reread it all

JonHus ,read john 22;22-23 and then you will have the law suit, good luck

The Church is the Bride of Christ, one flesh. We cannot keep thinking of her as separate from God, as if it were a completely separate and independent person. If we do that we will find apparent contradictions in our belief as Catholics, contradictions that are not there.

I make a error can you believe that, try 20:22-23,And I will keep you in my prayers, have a great day

Christ established his Church and the Apostles were its first Priests. Through Apostolic succession, the Priesthood has been passed down to today’s Priests. Do you know that every Priest can trace back through to Apostolic succession to the Apostles? These Apostles had been given the authority to Ordain new Priests as their successors with all of the Authority that was granted to them. Now to answer your question, and because you are a Bible believing Christian I will quote form the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 16 verses 16 - 19.
16 Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

So just whom was Jesus talking to. This is a literal passage with some straightforward language.

When a Priest forgives sins, it is not the Priest himself but the Priest acting on behalf of Jesus Christ

Most Protestant pick and well you know what I,m saying and just believe what they like and do not believe what they do not like ,they believe nothing of John 6 or nothing of John 20;22-23. But they have been around for ollny 500 or so years remember we have 1500 years up on them

My good friend Bill.

One of the incorrect statements often made by Catholics on this forum is that non-Catholics who hold the Bible in high regard feel free to interpret it in any way that suits their fancy. On the other hand, they (Catholics) brag that Catholics are protected from this “misuse” of Scripture by getting their information on the Bible from the Catholic Church. While I cannot speak for all Protestants, I can speak for myself. I would like to make this as clear to you as possible. I interpret Scripture by asking the Holy Spirit to guide me. I can check my interpretation of Scripture for errors by comparing it to Scripture. In other words, the Bible cannot contradict itself. So if I say that verse “x” means “y”, then I better be able to find verses to support my “y” and no verses to contradict my “y”. Jesus said “the Scriptures cannot be broken.” This bears repeating, the Scriptures cannot be broken.

Ok, now Bill, one of the central truths of the Bible is that only God can forgive sins against God. If there is any doubt in your mind about the accuracy of this statement then there is really no point in our continuing this discussion as much fun and entertaining as it may be. Jesus was sentenced to death by the Jewish leaders because he claimed to be able to forgive man’s sins against God. If Jesus were not God in the flesh, then the Jewish leaders would have been correct in their charge against him. If you or a church are teaching that someone other than God is able to forgive sins and use Scripture to back up the claim, they might I suggest that there is something wrong with your interpretation of those verses you use to support your claim? A bitter pill to swallow maybe, but this is what the Bible teaches.

In a previous response to you, I tongue and cheek forgave you for your sin of incorrect spelling and grammar. My forgiving you, nice as it is, is not the same as God forgiving you of your sins against Him. If I steal something from you, I have committed a sin against both you and God. I have taken something that rightfully belongs to you. I can apologize and or make restitution to you and you may or may not forgive me, which is your call. If you forgive me great, but unless I also confess this sin to God and ask His forgiveness, I have still broken God’s law and this needs to be addressed. But I can go to God and ask forgiveness and receive it from him regardless of what you do. True, the Bible teaches that true forgiveness can only be achieved by asking forgiveness (to God and the victim), repenting and making restitution to the victim. Notice that I’m not saying that a person can sin against his fellow man, ask God to forgive, then sin again with impunity. This is not what I’m saying so I ask that you do not make that charge.

If, on the other hand, you refuse to forgive me of a sin that that I have committed against you and I have asked God to forgive that sin and I have done everything possible to prove true repentance and you still refuse to forgive me for no good reason, then you now have a sin problem. You would be guilty of being stubborn, prideful, arrogant, un-loving, what ever. You, from God’s perspective hate me. This is what John 20:22-23 is teaching believers. Let God administer final justice, we my friend if we are true believers in Christ are to love one another, as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

Yours truly
Jon

Jon, Here is where You may be messing up " I interpret Scripture by asking the Holy Spirit to guide me. " You are saying all 35,000 non-cathloic denominantion are guide by the Holy Spirite and we know that is just WRONG. The CHURCH is the Pillar of Truth not the Bible 2Pet 3:16–2Pet 1:20=21 and the big one Jn 21;25 but its okay I can see you are still leading,Keep up the good word.
If you get 3 non-cathloic in a room with a Bible we will get 4 diff interpretation,Have a good day

D
There can only be one “true” Christian Church. How can the Holy Spirit guide the Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Baptist Church, etc. if all of those denominations have doctrines and beliefs differing from each other? id the Holy Spirit do this as YOU say He/,sh .e Guide you
