Church apologizes (?)

“The statement acknowledged that church members planned, aided and carried out the genocide, in which more than 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu extremists.”

“Many of the victims died at the hands of priests, clergymen and nuns, according to some accounts by survivors, and the Rwandan government said many died in the churches where they sought refuge.”

Yes, I heard this on BBCWorld Service news.

It is truly shocking if only one Hutu died because of the action either direct or indirect of Catholic clergy, but thousands?

The radio item was careful to stress two things. Firstly, that there were many Catholic clergy who protected their flock and even died with them, and secondly, that part of the problem was Catholic clergy being members of Government, so the massacre (unbelievably) was seen as approved.

Well to be entirelty honest I feel a little bit sick.

But with that said, it would be more accurate to day that Church members were involved in the Rwanada Massacre rather than the Church. We know that the Church is filled with broken, sinful people and that this brokeness can manifest itself in unspeakably evil ways. We also know that people frequently place their racial/political/tribal identity above their Catholic one and act accordingly. The result is… well… this.

Exactly, it is truly appalling when Catholic clergy and members actively participate or condone by words or by not speaking out against such evil. However, it is not the Church.

This is exactly what is happening in our country (United States of America) now. We have members of the Catholic Church supporting murder and some clergy openly supporting those same members. We have a lot of Catholic clergy that remain silent on the atrocities that are being carried out every day. Yet, the Church does not support such evil.

Trust in God’s promise the gates of hell will never prevail against the Church, no matter how bad things may look or get. False teachers and tares will always be among us.

[1Pt2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.]

[Mt13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. 31-35 …. 36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.]

How could they be members of the government? From canon law 285: “…Clerics are forbidden to assume public offices which entail a participation in the exercise of civil power.”

It is just as true to say that many Catholics were butchered. Anyone ever heard of Immaculee Ilibagiza, or Our Lady of Kibeho?

No… Just read about it as you mentioned Her…

Yes, I read two of her books. An amazing story and I admire her ability to forgive.

I have both of immaculee’s books about her survival…

Our lady of Kiebho was an appearance by Mary to warn, years in advance, of the coming massacre…they did not listen. 😦
I’m not sure if all the visionaries perished or just a few…but I believe a few of them were victims of the genocide.

Our Lady said in the apparitions that she was coming for the whole world, not only Rwanda. She said we were all on the edge of the abyss; we must embrace conversion.
