*…he also expressed concern about the “increasing concentration” of the media in the hands of a few multinational conglomerates *

That is concerning. The power that people like Rupert Murdoch and the Fox Network wield is not helpful either to genuine democracy or good public morality.

Except for EWTN, Catholic Answers and a handful of other grassroots Catholic media apostolates, I believe the Holy Father’s words will go largely unheeded.

The vast bulk of Western culture and society simply isn’t in the Holy See’s camp anymore, sad to say.

In a “genuine democracy” the majority rules and the minority have no voice whatsoever. Thank God the U.S. is a Constitutional Republic and not a “genuine democracy.”

We exert more “power” over Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News than it does over us. We are free to change the channel anytime. More dangerous are the likes of George Soros who uses his bloated wealth to try and sway public opinion and elections.

So using TV channels and newspapers to promote the viewpoint of an extremely right wing billionaire is less subversive of democracy than taking part in an open and avowedly partisan election process. Hmm, I wonder what the Holy Father was so concerned about then.
