Church of England blocks sale of church to ultra-conservative Catholic group (SSPX)

A formal hearing of the Church Commissioners in London has ruled the sale of St George’s Church in Gorton, Manchester, to the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) should not go ahead.

The society was in the headlines earlier this year when one of its leaders, British-born bishop Richard Williamson, who is now in the UK, was asked to leave Argentina after making “deeply offensive” comments about the Holocaust.

I should hardly call them ultra-conservative. I think schismatic (even if some of them are slowly coming back to the Church) would be more appropriate.

A position that the Church nor the Holy Father agrees with. ‘Canonically imperfect’ is more accurate.

I’ve begun using the term extra-conservative (that is, ``outside of conservative’’) for such groups.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with being ultra-conservative on a personal(*) level. Extra-conservatives, however, are always wrong.

(By the way, good on the Church of England! I’m not a fan of theirs, but credit where due.)

(*) You can make the argument that society wouldn’t function if everyone became ultra-conservative, but I’m not sure if that’s an argument against it.
