The church should fear the sin of its own members more than hatred against Christians, Pope Benedict XVI said. While the church has suffered from persecution throughout its history, it “is supported by the light and strength of God” and will always end up victorious, he said.

Beautifully said holy Father. it is the sins of Catholics against the Holy Church that is terrying.
By sins, I dont mean just those that are visible to us but most of all those of the traitors that work night and day to bring the Church down. those who teach falsehood to the faithfull with the intent to turn them agaisnt the Church.

Wise, especially when one considers that the sins of our Church will be what leads to its persecution (in the West, at least). If we all lived as Christ commands us, who would possibly object to us?

I couldn’t agree more with the Holy Father and with wisdomseeker and Mungling’s comments.

It is this crisis within the Church that is much more damaging and more sinister.

Ay-men!!!

I second that Amen,

With so many cherry picking Catholics who needs enemies?!

“The only danger the church can and should fear is the sin of her members,” the pope said.
The members of the church are the body of Christ. When they sin, we all to some degree bear the pain and responsibility … or else we are not one body. And no, it’s not fair, but I still suspect that is how it is.

Perfectly stated.

Some members of the Church need to get away from the victim mentality and start realized that some of the negative attention the Church is getting is due to the actions of Priests and Church leaders.

Does this make the Church less Holy and less True- certainly not! But getting all puffed up with indignation at perceived persecution, let’s look inward.

The Holy Father, again, makes an excellent point. Anyone notice he isn’t going around crying out “everyone is against us- it’s not fair!”

I think that wisdomseeker is twisting the words of the Holy Father which is pretty shameful.

cant find the verse, but there is a verse in scripture that reads to paraphrase, “dont worry about that which can harm the body, but worry about that which casts the soul…”

then, if your eye causes you to sin, cut it off, rather enter heaven with one eye than your soul to be burned…

so yeah, a phyiscal persecution should be the least of worries vs the salvation of the persons souls…

Or the complacent types who follow the Pharisee’s method of praying in the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. I know far too many smug Catholics who look down on their fellow Catholics for not measuring up to their measure of what it means to be a good and faithful Catholic. I’m relieved that the Pope came out and said this, because I’ve always seen that the worst damage to any organization comes not from the outsiders, but from the bad apples within.
