You can read the story here

Why would anyone want to set fire to Southern Baptist churches? Will this be considered a hate crime?

I am trying not to guess and while I wait for more information, please join me in offering prayers for our protestant brothers and sisters in Alabama.

Strange…

Do you know if they said anything about them being black churches? The article didn’t say anything about it, so they probably weren’t.

I heard that there was no pattern, it included white churches too.

.
That should depend on who did it and why.

Please tell me precisely what crimes are not considered “hate crimes.”
If there are hate crimes, then does it follow that there is by definition a “love crime”?

Err… Like, “I love you, so I’m going to protect you by killing you”? - Reminds me of Euthinasia… >_>

“Love”… 😦

The first set were white, save one.

We don’t know about the second set yet.

The 4 of the first 5 were white. Now the second 4 were all black. Whoever they are, they believe in equal rights. Who would burn Baptist Churches? I PRAY it’s not another religious group of any kind and is just some poor demented sickos.

Even if there is a religious group involved, I think these sort of attacks would qualify them for the “poor demented sickos” label. 😦

Its nice to read the concern of others regarding these arsons. These crimes are the sort that should unite Christians and any religious people. Even if it turns out that Baptist churches are being targetted, it is no less a crime against us all.
It’s hard to drive far on the two-lane roads that crisscross Alabama’s backwoods without passing a small Baptist church.
That very prevalence could be a reason why only Baptist congregations have been hit in a string of suspected arson fires in four rural counties since last week: Across broad regions of Alabama, there aren’t many congregations that aren’t Baptist.

I agree, and not just because I was raised Baptist. We would all be heart-broken if our churches were torched…

I remember right after 9/11, a group of people vandalized a Mosque in my hometown. But the next day, local Catholic Priests, Protestant preachers, Jewish Rabbis, and leaders of other religious groups all helped out to clean up the mess.

These types of crimes happen to all religions and denominations, and are always painful.

Men - come to the rescue please. How would it be if every church asked their male parishoners to work in pairs, 4 hour shifts, as watchmen through the nights until these miserable creatures are caught. Wouldn’t be so bad for just 4 hours and its in the South not here in the cold North! Bet another church won’t be attacked - the word will reach the perpetrators and they won’t know if they are being scouted.

Sure, why not?

Yes, even if they are our “seperated brethren” we are united by the indelible mark of baptism. This is a crime against all Christians.

I am a convert from the (Southern) Baptist faith and I know that despite the portrayals, the large majority are just trying to worship God in the manner in which they’ve been raised.
