This is exactly why I believe it is time for Catholic Apologetics to be upated regarding current science.

I think your point is that humans are more than simply animals.

If I remember my Thomisic-Aristotelian philosophy, humans are possesed of: Matter and Form, Soul (the quality of “human-ness”), and Spirit (the “image of God”). This spirit-quality is what separates us from all other things, living or inanimate.

Spirit and Soul are often misused in common philosophy. According to St. Thomas: Rocks have souls. Cows have souls. The soul is that concept of “rock-ness” or “cow-ness” that makes something what it is and not another thing. Humans have a “human-ness” that separates them from trees. Only humans possess that which makes us “created in God’s image”… our Spirit.

I hope this helps; I hope I got this right (it’s been a long time since college).

Well, Biology is always welcome here, but biology should not drown out other perspectives of people: Biblical perspective, philosophical perspective and such. As you indicated, biology can offer only a limited label about humans. That biologists don’t admit to other valid perspectives and don’t admit that their label is very limited is part of the problem.

I still think that the OP overstated when stating that “churches rejecting science altogether.”

Specifically, Catholic apologists need to recognize that the direction of evolution has changed and thus they need to update their presentations to meet the current challenges to the Catholic teaching on human nature and original sin. As far as I can tell, Intelligent Design is not equipped to handle a defense of the reality of Adam and Eve. That may be due to the fact that many Christians, including some Catholics, consider Adam to be symbolic of some kind of truth.

The odd thing is that Pius XII recognized the scientific change in evolution. Yet, according to what I read on CAF, instead of following the lead of Pius XII, some people tried to undermine him. CAF has been good to me; I have no complaints. I am happy to abide by their policies. However, I have reached the limit of what I can do here.

If you read Humani Generis carefully, you’ll note that Pope Pius XII was interested in considering both sides, for and against. And the teaching about Adam being the first true man is clear. If you read the later document, Communion and Stewardship, you will see the following:

“In continuity with previous twentieth century papal teaching on evolution (especially Pope Pius XII’s encyclical Humani Generis ), the Holy Father’s [Pope John Paul II] message acknowledges that there are “several theories of evolution” that are “materialist, reductionist and spiritualist” and thus incompatible with the Catholic faith.”

The issue is not cut and dry as some believe. The Church’s statements are far more nuanced and precise.

Thanks for the link. However, I prefer to read text to listening, so I bailed out of the lecture. I also could not glean in advance what the lecture was about and I tend to turn away from things that don’t plainly present themselves.

We absorb and learn visually, auditorially, and kinesthetically.

Folks who limit themselves to one medium miss a lot.

I think Climate Change is, well to put it bluntly, a load of rubbish, really. I like to phrase it as “The Earth is going through a phase that has most likely happened time and time again.” 🙂

Also, way off the current topic, but I remembered it when I originally saw this thread, was that a Muslim friend said that “Science should bring us closer to God himself, not steer us away.” The way I see this is that, to me Science is marvelling the great work of God himself, and going “wow this is amazing”…that is the only reason why I am studying Biology. I just think “wow, God did all of this…it is so amazing”. The things I have been taught is really amazing - to me anyway. 🤷

Today is Easter Sunday … and we are more and more stunned at the physics behind the Shroud of Turin …

history.com/shows/the-real-face-of-jesus shows the incredible burst of energy / light that created the image, but only on the top two micro-fibers of the shroud!

I just happened to stumble onto this program and only recorded the last half. I hope they rebroadcast it.

Some of the scientists working on this project were overcome by their “intimacy” with Jesus … to the point of being choked up almost to tears.

It is beautiful isn’t?! 🙂 There is some things that Science just can not answer for, like the shroud for example. Which is just amazing~
 
I think the only other science that has near as many marvels to bring wonder and awe at God’s creativeness as biology can is astronomy.
 
I would just like to repeat in detail, Science in its place as a servant is wonderous and good.

Science as an authority is unbearable and gruesome.

I agree.
Some scientific disciplines need to remember their place.

The reason being that science is amoral and is can therefore be used for immoral purposes…
