LONDON (AP) - Katie Holmes says she’s converting to the Church of Scientology, embracing the religion of her boyfriend, Tom Cruise.

Holmes, in London to promote her new film, “Batman Begins,” said Monday that she’s excited about her lessons in Scientology, a religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

The 26-year-old actress and Cruise went public with their romantic relationship in April. The former Catholic and star of television’s “Dawson’s Creek” grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

“We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams come true,” Holmes said.

Cruise was in Tokyo Monday for the premiere of his new film, “War of the Worlds.”

In an interview in the June 17 issue of Entertainment Weekly, the 42-year-old actor was asked if Holmes is curious about Scientology.

“Yeah, absolutely. She digs it,” he tells the magazine.

In response to a question about whether he’d asked Holmes not to do “Factory Girl” - about Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol - because of the drug use in the movie, Cruise says: “I don’t even know what ‘Factory Girl’ is.”

He adds: “Listen, the thing you’ve got to know about Katie is that she’s an incredibly bright and self-determined woman. She makes her own decisions.”

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly if he plans to propose to Holmes, Cruise replies: “It’s gonna happen, man. It’ll happen.”

I know I could look it up, but can anyone explain it in a paragraph? It’s been around for years and people talk about it all the time. Still, no one ever says what it is.

Peope don´t take seriously the religion and this is a problem. But we are free to traiticionate Jesus.

Scientology is a religion founded by L. Ron Hubbard in the mid-twentieth century. Its basic teaching is that people suffer from their emotional reactions to daily events, causing fear, anger, and sorrow. Scientology, through its practices, seeks to teach a person to overcome their emotional reactions, so that they can live a more joyful and productive life.

That’s the good side of Scientology. The bad side comes when you get more deeply involved in it, where you’ll find questionable teachings and behavior within the Scientology leadership. For instance, Scientology has a very negative and hostile attitude towards people who criticize it; and the higher teachings of Scientology involve alien life forms and other planets in outer space.

In a few words–It’s a money-making cult

I must be half scientologist. I do not believe in aliens, but I do believe in other planets. The truth is out there.

Scientology teaches that humans originally came from another planet in outer space, millions of years ago. The space alien Xenu imprisoned our souls on earth, and incarnated as Jesus in order to deceive humanity:

Xenu had incarnated as the obnoxious pervert Jesus Christ in order to enslave humanity even more with his preposterous religion. For this reason, the Church of Scientology has always endeavored to win as many converts from Christianity as possible.

That’s considered religion? Space aliens? When I read your first response, it sounded like a “self-help” ideology, not a religion. This is even worse. I agree, SAVE KATIE! How can anyone go from Catholicism to this?

Doesn’t Scientology sound like it was made up by a sci-fi writer. Wait a minute, it was!!!

We are not souls, but “thetans” who inhabit a shell (our body). The thetan has a “bank” (in the brain) that stores all the memories of experiences (called “ingrams”) that affect our underlying assumptions about our current life–how we react, respond, emotionally, physically, logically. The purpose of a scientologist is to get “Clear”, that is, through paying for a progression of courses (called “the Bridge”) and mainly “auditing” (similar to therapy, yet the scientologist holds in their hands two metal cans wired to an e-meter, which trackes electrical responses to “ingrams” that need clearing) the scientologist can clear his or her “bank” and have a clean slate and better handle his/her life. There is “study tech”, teachings of L Ron Hubbard, techniques to improve communication, get results, learn and retain information, improve your “tone level”. to the top brass, results are everything. If you are a true-blue scientologist you are called to evangelize the world, of course. If you decide to commit to “staff”, you are your results. You are judges by your “stats”, that is, the number of people you are signing up for the next course. Nothing should get in the way of a scientologist and his/her goals. Nothing. If your graph shows your “stats” falling, there is something wrong. You are sent to (I forget the jargon) “need handling” course. Apparently, their are “withholds” (sins) or other “ingrams” in the way of your success. If you question scientology or decide that you would rather spend your money on something other than the next course on “the bridge”, something is wrong with you. You must be a “supressive being”. If you break from scientology you are blackballed. You do not exist. If your daughter gives up on scientology, you break ties with her.

Any questions??

No, I think Cruise is the real deal. He’s been doing it for awhile. Holmes, on the other hand, is probably just a SINO.

They both need our prayers. Holmes is a Catholic, Cruise used to be-they are selling their own souls away.

I read your entire post and what I get from it is, it’s some sort of “self-help” pyramid scheme involving electronics. Thank you for the response. It’s actually wackier than I thought.

Ah, except the “staff” do not profit one iota from their sales/stats. None.

The millions and millions garnered from scientology go to snazzy high-dollar marketing (and “celebrity centers”), legal wranglings(of which there are quite a few), and the top brass in the company (let’s face it, it’s a business).

Had a booth at an indoor swap meet in Las Vegas one Christmas. Dealer across from me sold styrofoam gliders. Demostrated them all day long. Sold hundred at ten bucks a pop.

Day after Christmas, the gliders were gone. He was pitching Scientology. But you wouldn’t know that right off. He had a big sign which said, “Free IQ Tests!” Got the see the test (without taking it). Over 130 questions. Very personal. How do you feel about interracial dating? Questions about families. Finances. Politics. Very intrusive. Yet, he always had people there taking the test. He was sorting out the marks for contact later.

He never pitched his “test” to other dealers. He knew we knew a con when we saw one.
