Circumcision and Vaccines - my wife is now against both

@newbie25553

She seems to have been netted into some kind of conspiracy/fringe publication or blog or such. For that, I’m very sorry, because she’s probably going to be convinced of the righteousness of her cause and will hurt her relationship with you and with her children as a result. I would try to bring in a 3rd party such as a counselor or priest or both, along with some trusted friends if possible. Try to be calm and patient otherwise it can make things worse.

@CoffeeFanatic

The circumcision thing isn’t important, but the scruples behind it are. Scruples very rarely remain with just one issue. They spread.

ginger or southpaw, or has freckles, or wears glasses, or braces
🤷‍♂️

I didn’t know anyone who got teased for those things, but there were plenty of jokes about male organ.

When & when I grew up in the 80s and 90s, glasses and braces were cool. But jokes about the male organ were plenty.

I don’t understand - are brothers going to compare privates?
For real?
Maybe if they’re 2 or 3, but at disparate ages?

All brothers are different… my brothers (and classmates) did that kind of thing well past puberty. One kid constantly got teased due to privates in the showers during tenth grade gym.

But this was 1992, in rural Delaware
🤷‍♂️

Brothers and classmates all compared privates?
That just seems so weird to me.

Any thoughts here?
There are a lot of groups out there nowadays, mostly because of the internet, who think they have “woke” ideas. It sounds like your wife has been taken in by them.

Like has been said already, those ideas are easy to refute just within Catholic teaching. If she’s not open to the Catholic aspect then you’ll have a tougher job convincing her.

Possibly this vaccine idea will run its course?
I totally agree with her on the other issue. The risk of any unintended problems alone is worth avoiding it.

Any thoughts here? Anyone gone through something similar?
You should talk to your wife about this. And by “talk,” I mean you should listen. You don’t have to agree with her, but you need to make sure she knows that you are hearing her. If you ever hope to convince her to change her views, you first need to ensure that she doesn’t feel shut out, dismissed, or ignored.

The fact that she is against vaccines or circumcision is not the concerning part of this story. The thing you should be worried about is the type of information your wife is ingesting that is contributing to this sudden change in views.

Trust me on this. I know a lot of people in the anti-vaxxer community. And it is very, very easy for them to follow that trail into other sorts of conspiracy theories and harmful thinking.

A very good friend of mine got trapped in one of those mental prisons, and it destroyed his life. He lost his wife, his job, his home, and his daughter. It tore his family apart. It wasn’t until he had lost everything dear to him that he realized just how wrong he had been, and by then, it was too late.

It is very, very difficult to save someone once they go down one of those rabbit holes, but it is possible, and it is important to try. But in order to get your wife to listen to you, she needs to know that you respect and love her, and are willing to listen to her. Otherwise she will never truly hear what you have to say.

Try to get to the bottom of what is causing this sudden change of heart. Ask her about her reasoning, about the evidence, and where she is getting her information from.

There is an enormous amount of mental poison on the Internet today, and just like a physical poison, ingesting it can ruin your life. Don’t let that happen to your wife or your family.

This is one of those instances where my childhood among the doomsayers is helpful.

Truth: some years ago, vaccines used mercury as a preservative. This is bad. Nowadays you can just ask your doctor if the vaccines are refrigerated, instead of using any preservatives.

May Be True or False, research needed: childhood vaccines are bundled very close together. This makes pet owners nervous, let alone parents. Ask your doctor if they can be spread across a wider calendar timeline.

False (for the present, anyway): The rumor of 2020 is that the COVID-19 vaccine (if and when) will have a microchip in it. This can then be used for assorted evildoer purposes. At present, microchipping your pet will involve a chip the size of a grain of rice. Meanwhile, the largest needle that most humans meet is the blood donation needle. A grain of rice cannot fit through that bore. Moreover, if you were sitting for a flu shot (tiny needle) and someone approached you with a blood-donation needle (big needle), even a beginner usually can tell the difference.

Now, when we have Star Trek tech, those cell-sized “nanite” chips, that would become an issue. If someone believes that day has come, then please inform the rest of us.

Until then, you might want to educate yourself not just with medical literature but with some TV. The TV series “Emergency” and “Transplant” have both done vaccination episodes. (I.e., the parents said no. Plot ensues.)

But you’ll want to approach the situation with both tact and caution. Joy Behar of THE VIEW declared that she would never trust a COVID vaccine endorsed by A Certain Man. Specifically, she stated, “I’ll get one only if Ivanka gets one first.” To which girlchild said that she would get one on THE VIEW as soon as possible. (Basically, “your turn, lady.”)

You don’t want to do it to yourself, basically.

Learn whether she is getting her information from. Conspiracy theorists and back-to-nature off-gridders may seem to have the same rhetoric, but they reason it out differently.

Thanks and God bless.
If you’re thinking of having an extention built, you’d presumably talk to a qualified contractor. If you have problems with your teeth, you see a dentist. If you have tax problems you listen to your accountant and listen to your solicitor if you have legal questions. You talk to the experts and you take their advice.

See where I’m going with this…?

Does the Church teach that circumcision is a sin?
Yes, links in the other thread from the catechism.
Unless medically necessary there’s no reason.
And no, it’s not widely necessary.

Get your kids vaccinated even if it means doing so without telling your wife.

I didn’t see the links to the catechism where is specifically says that circumcision is morally wrong. Could you please repost that link? Thank you.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and can personally attest to being teased about glasses and braces (especially glasses).
Yeah, where I grew up, the rich kids has braces and glasses, so they were considered cool

🤷‍♂️

I did find this: “To sum it up: The Church has no issue with circumcision carried out for therapeutic reasons or reasons of religious or cultural tradition. It has no official stand against the practice when done for other reasons, except as a Christian rite. Moral opinion on the matter is not uniform.” From this website: Does the Church allow Circumcision? - The Southern Cross

So, if the Church hasn’t given exact guidelines, it’s safe to assume that it is allowed for cultural tradition…which means if Dad and brothers are circumcised, it would be ok if additional sons are circumcised, too.

Here, quoted for credit.

I can’t find @(name removed by moderator) other link.

But we don’t have our sons circumcised because of God’s promise to Abraham. St. Paul even said " e For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.*" The quote I posted said it’s allowed for cultural traditions.
