Circumcision in Modern Times

I wish I DID have my foreskin left intact, but I don’t blame my parents for it. They followed the advice of their pediatrician who convinced them that it would be better. Whatever.

We all “know how the procedure goes”. That doesn’t change the fact that actually watching a Circ procedure can’t be eye opening. All I had to do was hear it, but then, I can’t help but look because I want to know what’s really going on. But truly, if you can’t stomach it, don’t watch one. It is barbaric in every sense of the word.

Stop calling it barbaric, for goodness’ sake. I don’t know if you fully comprehend this, but it’s highly offensive to talk about something my parents did that way.

I would imagine that many surgical procedures, some of which have saved millions of lives, look pretty gruesome to a lay person’s eyes. There’s a reason they put that curtain up so you can’t see when they’re setting your innards aside during a c-section. Still isn’t an argument against he procedure itself.

It hasn’t been my experience that doctors claim that all males should be circumcised, though I realize that there are probably some people who feel that way.
I guess it depends on where you are and can be different from one place to another.
In my experience, it’s been presented as a low-risk procedure that has some hygienic and preventative benefits.
Sure, that’s one of the ways I hear it sold over here as well. The problem is, it removes a perfectly fine organ, that has benefits and functions of it own (including hygienic), for the sole purpose of preventing some rare infection that a male has a minute potential of getting, that could be treated with an ointment/antobiotic. So…they are still trying to sell something that is entirely unnecessary.

Male genital mutilation (MGM) has no place in society. It is absurd to think that the human male needs to be surgically corrected upon birth. Every supposed benefit of MGM is easily debunked. It’s a harmful and unnecessary violation of the rights of the child to bodily autonomy.

I am saying that it is, for what it actually is, a barbaric procedure (that’s the only way to describe what happens during the procedure). I can’t help it if you internalize that and project it onto your parents. I didn’t say anything about them. I am speaking to the procedure itself. If you think my language is too strong, then stomach it up and watch one. If you can’t do that, don’t sit there and tell me how I can’t describe the procedure.

My mother had me circumcised and I am glad that she did so. As an EMT I have seen too many raging infections in seniors that weren’t circumcised from lack of proper care.

All my sons were also circumcised.
The people I know who work in emergency medicine usually have their sons circumcised.
My own father was intact. He had a stroke late in life and had many infections during the last years of his life.

Our sons had their wisdom teeth removed before they had any problems, too. I don’t see a difference. There is room for discussion about what is and is not isn’t a good idea, but it is not inherently immoral–let alone barbaric!!–to have a prophylactic surgical procedure performed on a child.

During male genital mutilation, approximately half the skin of the penis is amputated (sliced off), including the most pleasure sensitive regions. It’s the textbook definition of barbarism.

PetraG!

Maybe you will answer my question - - is there a huge problem with raging infections in Europe or Asia with uncirc’ed males? Because there are whole continents of people who don’t circ their boys! How do they get through life?

There are parts of the world where immunization is rare, too.

I guess some people feel that males are disgusting and can’t be trusted to keep themselves clean, or should even have to be bothered with things like washing? We already know that society has a fairly toxic “boys will be boys” mentality regarding sexuality and preventing VD. Meanwhile, a doctor mentions an HPV vaccine for a girl and the parents are like, “What are you implying about my daughter?”

Yep. Instead of teach our kids to stay chaste and abstain from extramarital sex, we’ll chop off foreskins!! 😉
Except, being circumcised doesn’t prevent STD/VD. Nor does it prevent boys from wanting to have sex.
Nor does it make boys more responsible about cleaning. Those doctors mantras should be “Education, not Mutilation” (I had to try to make it rhyme). But instead, they are like, “let’s cut all the penises!!!..because…foreskin!!!” (Hyperbole, of course…but not too very much.)

I actually think the wisdom teeth thing is a fair comparison. I was really surprised when my dentist suggested I have mine out when they weren’t hurting anything. She said there was a chance they might get infected and have to be removed and my insurance would cover it. I went ahead and turned her down. I didn’t have the time to take off work.

Circumcision doesn’t affect fertility, nor is circumcision generally thought to enhance or detract from sexual pleasure for men or their partners.

Female “circumcision” is actually a procedure more analogous to removing a male’s entire penis. Male circumcision does not have the same effect.

That isn’t to say the evidence in favor of the procedure is so compelling that some might believe it is unnecessary. It is only to say it is not so compelling that no one should ever consider it.

Which isn’t related, because circucision is not immunization against anything, except these rare infections that can be treated topically or with antibiotics.
SO…is there a huge problem with raging infections in Europe or Asia with uncirc’ed males? Because there are whole continents of people who don’t circ their boys, and those boys seem to have learned how to wash and to avoid infection.

I think that the idea is that they won’t have to clean as much in the first place.
