VIENNA, Austria (Zenit) - The Cistercian monks of the Stift Heiligenkreuz Abbey are unlikely candidates to make pop music’s Top 10 list – but they did just that, debuting at No. 9 in the United Kingdom.

A CD of their prayer, “Chant: Music for Paradise,” (sold as “Chant: Music for the Soul” in some countries) has been called a “must-have” by reviewers.

Cistercian Father Karl Wallner, rector of the Benedict XVI Papal University of Heiligenkreuz, attributed the CD’s overwhelming welcome to the fact that “Gregorian chant spreads harmony, peace and consolation in the depth of the soul.”

I bought this cd a few weeks ago - it is beautiful! There are about 25 different chants on it, some familiar and others not so, including the full Missa Pro Defunctis and full Compline. I think it’s great to hear chant sung by those who are fully immersed in the tradition and who value it for the prayer aspect as well as the musical aspect. It’s currently at number 15 in the Irish Album Charts - up from 16 last week. This is great, given that this album is competing with well established ‘pop’ stars such as Neil Diamond and Amy Winehouse (who is only at number 17!!).

🙂 I’ll have to add this to my collection - thanks for the info! 👍

Beautiful:
This CD is available to order through American Amazon.com now but won’t be released until July 1st.
It’s soon to be released on Amazon, but the full album is already available on iTunes. 👍

Wow. That is really cool. 🙂 Maybe this can be a powerful evangelization tool! 👍😃

Something I forgot to mention in my earlier post about this wonderful cd - the chant texts are also printed in the accompanying booklet, in Latin and English. So it’s great if one wants to sing along with the chant, especially the lesser known ones. The psalm tones they use for Compline are very simple too, so if anyone is interested in singing the Liturgy of the Hours every day, the monks provide a model which should be suitable for use with other psalms.
