*"A MASSGOER who objected to receiving the Eucharist on his tongue at a Latin Mass in Co Mayo had to be restrained when his protests led to a scuffle in the church. The incident at Knock Shrine was described by the Latin Mass Society of Ireland as “sad” and “disturbing”.

It occurred when a man approached the altar of the parish church and insisted he get communion in his hand rather than on the tongue.

Fr Wulfran Lebocq, who was assisting on the altar, quietly told the communicant to take communion on his tongue. This is in accordance with the traditional Latin rite.

According to onlookers, the communicant told the priest: “You’re in Ireland now”.

Before being restrained, the communicant grabbed a host from the ciborium, and in the process the host fell on the floor".*

Dear me… this person obviously has some incredibly overpowering mental problems, or is influenced by the demons. Either one is possible, and I hardly think merely having a bad day could produce such a vehement furor. It is a shame that anyone could even contemplate so angrily and disrespectfully approaching the Body of God! Regardless of the circumstances, we should pray for this sick man’s healing in the eyes of Christ. The heavenly physician is just waiting for him. 🙂

We shouldn’t focus too much on disruptions like this. Most of them appear to be singular and ephemeral. Once they become endemic to the Mass, then we may complain.
 
This person, obviously unstable, might just have been preparing to secrete and later desecrate the Eucharist. One wonders, since we hear that more of this is going on.
 
On the Rorate Caeli blog it was reported that he was a laicized priest. FWIW.

Interesting. If so, then with consecrated hands, he actually would have been fit to handle the Sacred Species.

Nevertheless, this sounds like an unfortunate situation. He should have received according to the norms established by appropriate liturgical law, not insisted on doing it the way he personally preferred.

Well, I don’t think anybody is allowed to grab our Lord. If he’s there in the congregation, he has to receive like everybody else (I also think that the indult doesn’t apply to the EF, but that’s a separate issue).

I think that the civil penalty for roughly handling our Lord ought to be severe. This guy got away with a grave injustice. Hopefully Ireland will go back to being more Catholic some day.

In both forms, EF and OF, if a priest is laicized, the rule is that he live and worship AS IF he were a lay man. That’s the meaning of laicization.

Even if the minister of Holy Communion knows that the man is an ordained priest, he cannot allow him to serve himself unless the priest is in good standing with the Church. Even a suspended priest, may not self-communicate. The host must be administered by the minister of Holy Communion.

This is most unfortunate scene that should have been avoided.

The man should have simply walked away.
He had no business taking the Host from the priest.
And if he’s Catholic, he knew he had no business doing that.
He should have left well enough alone, for the sake of God and others if nothing else.

Post numb 9, gives some suggestions for starters.

Not being there, I don’t know anything about the man’s demeanor when he came up for communion. I can’t say if this looked like a troubled person or not. If he did, someone should have intervened before getting all the way up to the priest. This is pure speculation at this point, unless one was there.

I was traveling through a diocese where they don’t have communion in the hand. I went to mass and spontaneously put out my hand. The priest simply gave me communion. Later, I asked one of the brothers at the house where I was staying. He said, “Oh, I forgot to tell you.” Oh well, what could I do at that point? 🤷 But I assure you that I did not look menacing, nor did the priest and I get into any kind of exchange. Maybe it was the habit. By that I mean that the priest realized that I was not a lose canon.

One of these days, a group of trouble-makers will probably take a case like this to the so-called “European Court of Human Rights”, and win…the TLM is a violation of the “right” to choose CITH and standing. Or some other absurd claim.
