I feel like I am going insane. My Wife asked me for a divorce in June, and since then, I have lost my job, the house has been sold, and we are living in separate apartments.

We have been married for 5 years, 3 of which I spent on the road Monday through Friday, for work. It was a good job, and helped us meet our financial goals, when we decided that it was right for us, the plan was to stay at the company for 5 years, or until something closer to home came along. I stubbornly adhered to the plan, taking for granted that any deterioration of the marital relationship would be fixable once our financial goals where met. We talked about how the job was affecting our marriage, but i never thought it would come to divorce, each time she would ask me to start looking for a new job, I did, only to have her come back a few days later and tell me to stick with it.

We had a communication break down, and I refused to see it. When she asked me for a divorce I was devastated (still am) and I have been trying to get her to come home for the past five months. My son, who is 3 has told both of us that he is sad that we are not living together, and until recently he refused to let me read him “Guess how much I love you” to him at night, a practice that we kept since he was born, albeit on the weekends when I was home.

I found out a few weeks ago that my wife was having an affair, it started in April and she hid it from me until I got suspicious when my son mentioned “mommy’s new friend” by name. A mental flag went up, I knew who the guy was and I knew that he was married, I contacted his wife and sure enough, he had been much sloppier about the affair, putting charges on a joint credit card that his wife found.

When I confronted her, she confessed but went on to say that she had no intention of coming home, and that what she had was “real” with this guy. Things were easy, and while she was sorry for what she had done to me, she no longer wanted to fix our marriage.

This has, against all the reason and analytic thinking in my head, caused me to redouble my efforts to get her to come back. All the research I have done on divorce in general, and affairs in particular, point that the affair will not last, and that the behavior pattern she is setting up for herself is only going to cycle further out of control.

My family thinks I am crazy, her family will not talk to me, and most of my friends are trying to be supportive, but do not understand.

I just don;t know what to do, except stay on the path that I am on, my therapist is helping me identify the and deal with the emotional fall out of this, and I’m doing what I can to focus on myself and my son in the mean time.

Am i holding on too tight? Should I just walk away and seek an annulment based on the evidence that she never intended to keep the sacrament? I’m lost in the woods and can’t see the forest from the trees.

I stumbled upon a song by Kutless the other day that sums up my feelings entirely. granted it’s about the prodigal son, but it sure seems to apply"

“Come Back Home”

How long till you come to the end of your reckless streak
How long till the freedom weighs you down
How long till your heart figures out that you need me
How long until you turn around

When you come back home
I’ll be running out to meet you
When you come back home
You’ll find that I’ve never left you
You’ll see every wrong turn every bridge you’ve burned
It’s all forgiven and gone
When you come back home
When you come back home

I wanna see that face that I’ve been missing so much
I want to wrap my arms around your neck
I want to welcome you back to the place where you belong
I want to show you love has never left

I’ve paid the price so have no fear
There’s nothing but mercy here yeah

Mercy is waiting
When you come back home

First, don’t worry about what people think. Your family, your friends, her family, her friends, it doesn’t matter what any of them think.

If you can find it in your heart to forgive your wife, even if she hasn’t or never asks for your forgiveness, and want to fight to save your marriage, even if your wife says she will never come home, then by all means do so.

Talk to your wife. Don’t argue, accuse, cry, or whine. Tell her you forgive her. Tell her you love her. And tell her that you want to save your marriage. Keep the message clean and simple and keep repeating it until she comes around.

This may not work at all. You may not succeed. It may be impossible.
But pray and know that with God nothing is impossible.

Don’t give up.

I’ll pray for you and your marriage.

I know it may not work, but your words of encouragement made my cry. I feel like I am standing out on a limb all by myself, and while the ones who love me are waiting below with a net to catch me, no one wants to be out in this limb with me.

You are not alone Jim.

Lots of people are thinking of you and praying for you right now.

You are not alone.

From a man with two small children and raised by a single mother. Only God can heal these wounds. The most important thing is your child and making sure he knows you are trying and that he is loved. Your wife is satisfying her selfishness. (sorry if that sounds rude) But make sure you take care of yourself so that you can take care of your child. I will be praying for you.

Thank you all. I am feeling heartened. Thank you for your prayers on this situation.

Brother!

I went through something very similar almost 8 years ago. I understand your pain; I know its utter misery! Pray to our Mother. Her prayers to her Son saved my life. I was able to surrender my life and trust in Him as I should have been, but admittedly didnt while married.

I am definitely praying for you, and as other posters have said, you are NOT alone. I think the other posters have all given the advise I would have offered except for one thing. Read what the Church teaches about marriage, about the nature of the sacrament and how our marriage is really about two people helping each other as well as our children get to heaven. Envision what marriage should be should you have a chance to get back together. And make sure you are the person God intended you to be. Pursuing our mission is something we need to be sure we are doing but it is also attractive to those around us, particularly our spouse. Im not suggesting this will bring your wife back, but should you be able to remarry I think youll be in a lot better place to have the marriage God intended.

God bless!

My most fervent prayer is that God makes me the man he wants me to be.

I just sent her an invitation to come to the park with my son and I, she told me to stop doing that.

The hits just keep on coming.

Jim,

I’m so sorry to hear of your situation. You have received a lot of encouragement from others and I also encourage you to fight the good fight.

That said, you indicated that divorce papers will be signed next week. I hope you have an attorney who is looking out for your interests. I’ve seen other guys in your situation who believe that their wives will come to their senses, and consequently, do nothing to protect themselves legally. With God’s help your wife may eventually see the error of her ways and return to you. At this point in time however, barring some kind of miracle, you’re getting divorced next week, like it or not. Pray for her return, but protect yourself in the meantime.

I am, at my core, a pragmatist. We have worked out a settlement that is 50/50 physical and legal custody, with equal amounts of parenting time, in fact I have slightly better time than she does, 6 full days, with my 7th day in the middle of hers.

The terms were skewed more in her favor before I found out about the affair, thank God I found out before the papers were signed.

Though I do feel that everything I’ve done to protect my boy has been taken as a personal attack, which doesn’t help the reconciliation process.

VERY sound advice, a man I know well was in a very similar situation and he wanted nothing more than to keep his marriage and family and while it was commendable and right he just knew she would come around, she did not and he didn’t hire a lawyer, 4 years later he is still financially very much behind the 8 ball and scared to death for his future. I will be praying for you and your marriage but PLEASE protect yourself.

I am protected. My lawyer is amazing, and has protected my finances and right to be a father.

Ask said up there, I’m a pragmatist at my core. “Expect the best, prepare for the worst”

Really? Has he arranged that your precious 3 year old won’t be subjected to your wife’s cohabitating boyfriends?

Mom’s boyfriend in general put children at great risk of abuse and neglect.

Go for full custody. Or even better kep fighting for your marriage.

Have you and she discussed the implications of all this on your faith? Your souls? Was she sacramentally participating in the church when this affair all started?

Unfortunately, father’s right in general suck in this country. So 50/50 across the board is the best I will be able to do without spending upwards of 15k, that I don’t have, with a low percentage of winning.

Also unfortunately, I can not bar the OM’s interaction with my son, I can only bar him from sleeping over on nights when my son is with my wife. He’s already started buying toys for my boy, to bribe him to like him. A three year old is an easy age to win over with a shiny truck.

I know for a fact, because I have spoken to the OM’s wife, that he has not so much as bought diapers for his own 7 month old.

My wife will not talk about the church with me.

He’s leaving his wife with a seven month old?!?!?!?

That guy must be a real prince.

I will pray for you, your wife, you child, the adulterer, the adulterer’s wife and everyone else involved tonight.

In the meantime, please forgive your wife and the man whom she cheated with. Harbor no hatred or malice towards them. Instead, love them. Desire what is good for them and be willing to sacrifice for their sake. For, hopefully, by your love and goodness, they will realize the error of their ways and you would have help to save their souls.

Even if your wife leaves you and even if your family and friends forsake you, then please maintain your faith. For it is trials like these that determine the genuineness of your faith. It is also a good way to set a good example for your child. By being strong in faith through this ordeal, hopefully your child will be strong in faith for the rest of his life.

I do not speak out from my own experience and wisdom. I am still a single college student who has not been through the rigors of work and married life. My own words would mean nothing.

What I do speak out from is the divine wisdom of Christ, the Apostles, and the Church. Such wisdom, despite inexperience and lack of knowledge, will make any man wiser and closer to salvation. This applies to you as well.

God Bless and take care.

Well, he’s something.

I’ve found it much easier to forgive my wife than him. Of course I don’t know him, or his story, only his acts. I confess the hatred I harbor for him everyday. It makes no rational sense, since my wife is a willing participant, but it’s where I’m at.

I have found no redeeming qualities in this man. He is no father to his son, he is committing adultery against me and his own wife, and he is trying to win over my son with gifts and “being his buddy”. I have absolutely no respect for him, I pray only that God forgive me for that hate, and forgive him, and do with that man as he will.

I ask for the strength to forgive him, but I can’t lie during prayer and say that I do forgive him. Hopefully, in time I will be able to.

And I am sure the Lord will answer your prayer so long as you truly desire to have that strength to forgive. I have never been cheated on or suffered marriage problems, but I did experience severe hatred toward others. I used to fantasize obsessively about how misfortune would come upon those who have wronged me. I even found myself smiling when misfortune did come upon them. But, ever since my spiritual awakening, I have found it increasingly difficult to hate. I still do feel hate and malice, but not as much as I used to. Instead I feel a burst of love and concern for my enemies and even the enemies of others (your wife’s adulterer included). Its completely involuntary sometimes. I owe this goodness not to me (something like this could not have come from me) but to God. I bet he saw the hatred in my soul and wanted to save me. I saw what he was trying to do and agreed to accept his ways. It is only when I do not accept his ways and the ways of the church that I regress.

If you truly desire the power to forgive the greatest transgressions, then I am sure that, as the Lord has helped me, he will help you.
