Like Hurricane Katrina evacuees two years earlier in New Orleans, thousands of people rousted by natural disaster fled to the NFL stadium here, waiting out the calamity and worrying about their homes.

The similarities ended there, as an almost festive atmosphere reigned at Qualcomm Stadium.

Bands belted out rock ‘n’ roll, lavish buffets served gourmet entrees, and massage therapists helped relieve the stress for those forced to flee their homes because of wildfires.

“The people are happy. They have everything here,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared Monday night after his second Qualcomm tour.

Not a fair comparison, if you are trying to contrast it with Katrina victims at the NO Superdome.

Lets surround Qualcomm with water, cut off food, drinking water and electricity and pull all the cops for a couple days and see how things change… 😉

The REAL difference is not necessarily the people, but the government. I’ve said all along that there was no excuse for the Superdome not to have been provided with auxilliary electric power and an adjacent reservoir that could quickly be isolated from the City system in case of emergency. NO simply didn’t plan well and it seems San Diego did.

And it seems they did it all without the help of the federal government. What a novel concept. 🙂

Glad to know it went smoothly. My son, his fiancee, and her family has to spend some time there when the fires were headed for their aprtments. Fortunately, they are able to move back to the apartments again.

They are getting married next week, and the hotel has assured us that our reservations are still good, so as long as Interstate 8 is open, guess we’ll get a first hand look at the devastation.
