Clapping during the Gloria?

I’m getting to the point where I’ve had enough.

The morning at our earliest Mass (by far the most reverent Mass at our parish) and handful of screw-ups started to clap during the Gloria! I have to admit that this made me angry!

“Glory clap clap glory to God, clap clap, glory to God in the higest, clap clap…”

Does anyone else have this sorta garbage going on in their parishes? Give it a month and it will become “part of the Mass” and we’ll never get ride of it! I can just imagine the reception I would receive if I brought this to the attention of our “administrator pro-tem.”

ARGH! I am so darned angry about this!

Drives me nuts too, I just sing the Gloria while not participating in the clapping. I think it would have a place in a Life Teen Mass, but not in your normal Mass.

Then again, I would prefer more Latin or all Latin anyway.

This would be prime 10:45 Mass junk. But I have not heard the Gloria clap yet. Hopefully you didn’t give them any ideas. Its loud enough. (Actually this Mass is sometimes referred to as the Rock and Roll Mass) Drums, tamborines and all.
 
Whatever happened to reverence during Mass? This kind of thing needs to be reported to the bishop. Truely sad that it should come down to something like this.

That one still haunts me on occasion. I just don’t get it to be honest. It seems so gimmicky. The question that I ask is, whats the point? Does it really augment the liturgy in a positive manner? Is it really all that necessary? Thats a lot of my problem with music at the mass, so much of it just seems so superficial and commercial. As of late I’ve just been going to mass with a new mindset. I try to focus on the text as much as I can. Part of me has to block out whats going on around me sometimes, otherwise I’ll just be seething throughout mass. Its not ideal, but its the best I’ve been able to do. Best of luck to you. If you feel you need to bring it up, don’t be afraid. Be forthright, honest, and most of a charitable. Take a moment to cool down (important) and explain your views. If he/she recieves you coldly, thats his/her problem not yours.
 
People don’t realize that clapping has an actual liturical function. So, technically clapping should only be done at the proper litugical time which is at the acknowledgement of the election of the new Bishop after the reading of he Bull.
 
Clapping as a sign of approval is one thing but I got the impression that this was syncopated clapping as a form of rythmn - another protestant mega-church as entertainment issue.
 
We have a folk Mass once a month and they do the happy clappy (as I like to call it), it makes me cringe, I refuse to clap and get strange looks from the neighbouring pews.

Ours is Gloria (clap, clap, clap), Gloria (clap, clap, clap), in excelsis(sp) Deo (clap, clap clap) and the finale that really gets me is when the Gloria ends and you get the three loud claps :o

Question: Is the Gloria sung or said? I would bring it up with your parish priest and bishop. Try to remind people that the Mass is the Most Holy Sacrifice. There were no people clapping at the foot of the cross.

It’s sung. In the past, the Gloria was sung with perhaps 90%+ participation. The place used to ROAR. It was great. The Gloria (and other singing) did just what it’s supposed to do – prepare us (and lift us) for the representation of the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Then it changed into a Gloria with weird starts and stops. Maybe 50% of the people now sing.

We don’t have a pastor right now.

What I find so insulting is that this (07:00) Mass is by far the most reverent one we have. They just HAD to foul it up. Any sign of concern will be met with blank stares.

I’m convinced this is the work of Satan.
 
I have battled this problem myself at our 10:30 mass. It is so sad for me to have this happen. Not only have they added a guitar player and smacking rhythm sticks, but also clapping. We are to clap along to the Gloria and !! the Holy, Holy song. I find it to be very distracting. I cannot concentrate and I am so wound up about not liking this new way of things - that I find my heart and focus really are not where they should be. My husband shares my feelings. To remedy the situation we have started attending a different mass time. They are still doing the traditional hymns and such at the Saturday mass. So . . . we have switched. It is hard to deal with what seems to be irreverant and new-agey behavior in the mass instead of what should be time honored tradition and ritual. 😦
 
I’m sorry to interrupt here but those of you who have the option to go to another mass WITHOUT the innovations, need to count your blessings. MANY people here DO NOT have that option.

And what about the people who DO like this form of worship? They should just be disregarded because you want that mass time?

Come on people, this is what cooperation is all about. Go to the less innovative mass. If it is not popular maybe it will be dropped but for goodness sake, that Our Lord that you do have the option to go to a conservative mass!
 
I am opposed to all clapping at mass. We go to Mass to worship God and any clapping is a distraction from that (particularly for those with sensitive hearing).
 
Question. If the clapping sound still continued during the gloria, but instead of originating from the congregation, it came from the percussion stop on an elaborate pipe organ, would you guys still be offended?

Clapping during the gloria during the mass isn’t my thing either (although I like it at prayer groups outside of mass). However, its seems to me that its a lot more of a cultural preference then any sort of liturgical abuse, as you guys make it out to be.

Aren’t there more important things out there to get angry about?

It is time to stand up and fight for what is right. My parish would not dream of doing it. I would suggest that you reach out to the Bishop and let them know what is going on. This should put an end to it. You must do something. There is no place for that in the Mass.

I left a parish because of a Gloria that was more like a pagan ritual in a old Bomba the Jungle Boy movie.

Gypsy jingle jangle tambourines, maracas, little hollow sticks, clapping.
What the cantor did with that tambourine was blasphemous. She must have been a recovered belly dancer.

Later I learned that some music directors in the diocese were actually pushing that stuff to jazz up the Mass. They seem to think it was charismatic music.
It is more like a motion and commotion Mass.

How is letting everyone in the church be pleased with the way they worship not cooperating?

In fact, I feel that if everyone of us were allowed to worship in our own individual way, these types of innovations would stop. People would go to the conservative mass and the other would die out. OR perhaps in this area, people want the clapping. You may feel that this is not appropriate, and I have no experience personally, but this may well be what goes on at a Charismatic Mass. That is fully approved by the Vatican.

What I am saying is if you are offered a conservative mass, even if that is only one of the masses at your parish, count your blessings. You could live in Detroit, Cleveland or many of the other Diocese where finding a mass without clapping and waving is a miracle of God.
 
I’ve seen the ‘Alleluia’ clap (before the Gospel…"Alleluia (clap), Alleluia (clap), Alleluuuuuuuuuuiyyyyaaaaaaaaaa.."), but not the Gloria clap. (thank God for small favors). At least the Alleluia clap is shorter.
