Get your “more Catholics than the Pope” sewage off this thread! Receiving in one’s hand is allowed by the Church. Deal with it.
Are you kidding!!! Aren’t you the guy who called JPII “weak” or something similar b/c he allowed altar girls, but now it’s ok to receive in the hand so deal with it? I surely hope you jest, Altarman, b/c I would be spun around in circles to think you’re serious on this one – tell me it’s sarcasm and you didn’t just totally contradict yourself!!! Don’t let me down like this Altarman…I’m counting on your brash nature…LOL…😛

I think I might throw my keys at that DRE as soon as it made that request.
You and me both. I am so happy that none of this nonsense has entered my diocese yet. What can you do about it? Would running for church council help at all?

You’re right. It’s not a liturgical abuse. It’s just horrible manners – particularly because it was started at by far our most solemn and reverent Mass.

The people that attend this Mass are older – they don’t fight – they just slowly stop attending Mass and that is tragic! The sick part is that some brain-dead losers are trying to “boost” attendance by implementing this sorta garbage. EDIT
I got blasted on these boards for stating that holding and lifting a senior’s arthritic hands is painful for them but they just go along because of the changes they had to endure during VII. Many of our seniors DID stop attending or attended because a bus would pick them up from the home and this was their only outing.

It’s sad in my opinion.

I remember that thread as a showdown between the conservatives Catholics and the passive aggressives, oops, I mean progressive Catholics 😉

Too true!

What about some more thought?:
The origin of the current practice of Communion in the hand in Western Christianity can be traced to the Protestant Revolution, or “Reformation.” Some will argue that this was the reintroduction of a formerly universal and venerable practice. We will deal with that idea below. But even if it were the case that this was formerly a practice in the Catholic Church, its introduction in the sixteenth century was hardly orthodox. Rather, it was an embodiment of a denial of the Real Presence as taught by Christ and his Church, and of the reality of the Catholic priesthood. It was a liturgical consequence of a prior heresy.
It is well known that Communion in the hand began spreading during the early nineteen-sixties, in Catholic circles in Holland…

Receiving in one’s hands dates from the early Church. Altar girlies dates from 1994. Do the math.

Clapping during the Gloria? Sounds like a spiritual revival more than the solemn, reverent Sunday Mass.
I’m sorry that this goes on in your parish. Mine still hasn’t crossed the line on that one . . . yet.

I’m getting to the point where I’ve had enough.

The morning at our earliest Mass (by far the most reverent Mass at our parish) and handful of screw-ups started to clap during the Gloria! I have to admit that this made me angry!

“Glory clap clap glory to God, clap clap, glory to God in the higest, clap clap…”

Does anyone else have this sorta garbage going on in their parishes? Give it a month and it will become “part of the Mass” and we’ll never get ride of it! I can just imagine the reception I would receive if I brought this to the attention of our “administrator pro-tem.”

ARGH! I am so darned angry about this!

no math, just geography…in both cases, Rome said it’s ok (lighten up, wouldya? If I was attacking, I would not have posted a cutsie-pie little smilie face…)

**Geez, I guess I am going to H–E–double hockey sticks, because I remember being an “altar girlie” back in 1975. Of course, I was always bad at math  .

But, I do have to agree with a previous poster: It is better to try to fight, especially if your family has been in this church for 6 generations.

You cannot be alone. You don’t have a pastor? Is yours a cluster parish? Or are you just waiting for someone to be assigned?

So you have a seminary in your area? Would you be able to request someone from there?

I’ve noticed from other threads that your Board of Directors are not the type of people who can be reasoned with most times. If I’m wrong, I’m sure you’ll let me know. Is there any way you can go to them about this? They must want to draw the line somewhere, you just have to let them know you are not pleased with this change in liturgy.**

Suggesting you are going to hell does what? Soften the fact that you (and likely your parents) chose not to follow what the Church directed? Interesting…

What about the other suggestions? Will they work or not? Is there any way we can help?

Sad. Clapping during the Gloria will NEVER make the Mass more “enjoyable.”

It’s horrible that you “hate” any Mass.
you are right since I used thwe wrong choice of words to show a point in defense of what you all seem to hate. I dislike masses that don’t have singing and instruments since I enjoy singing. Whoever said the mass can’t be enjoyable. These modern ways of doing mass seem to get mroe people to go right? So why not have both. Have a mass that is traditional and one that is liek the one you dislike. But it really should be done at the student or teen mass as one of you pointed out.

Probably not.

In my city, the student Newman Center has one of the most traditional Mass celebrations in town. I WISH that all of the “happy clappys” at some of the other parishes would follow the example of the young people and treat Mass as the serious prayer that is it.

Actually, I see teens more into the Praise & Worship type of music without the clapping. At all.

At my own parish, we have four separate choirs, one for each hour. The Saturday 17:00 choir is run by Charismatics, but has touching and inspiring music, and NO clapping! For the Sunday choirs, the 8:30 has only 4 members, so it has quite old music and pleasant for a quieter Mass. Then you have the 10:00 Mass, which does have folk music, and are cheesy hymns with the clapping Gloria. Then it mellows (or worsens) with the 11:30 choir.

Wow… I feel like I have just done a sin for pointing that out. But anyways, culturally, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that the Devil was behind it. A Mass in Africa would probably use alot of singing and indigenous instruments that we probably are not used to here. Or in India with their repetitive bhajans. Are these people committing liturgical abuse just because their culture differs from the norms of Europe, yet it is their style of worship? There are other types of Catholic chanting besides Gregorian, and God forbid their heathen roots should enter our church doors! 😉

by the way, our student newman mass is very traditional as well and there is no clapping. I just like masses that have singing and instruments since singing is praying twice, correct? So I relaly should have said this from the beginning but I am not arguing for this beacuse I am supporting something my church does. However, I just think I can make an argument for the understanding on why it can occurr in certain places. I think I have only seen this clapping once and I can’t evern remember where it was. It might have been some chrch in Vegas. However, it didn’t bother me. I could probaby very easily made the augment in either directon and if the majority of you were in support of clapping I probably would have argued against it. Although in picking a side I think I am more in support if it now.

Nothin’ wrong with singing at all. 🙂 I just prefer an organ and quior to the rock band that sometimes shows up a my parish.

I am more of a fan of choir myself at least in church since I have a choir voice and my voice wouldn’t be good in a rock band. But when I first read this I thought you were all against any kind of musical instrument or singing in church. I made a misinterpretation in reading these posts.
