Classical Music Anyone?

Silly me, I thought Ling Ling was a panda 🐼

I enjoy classical music but don’t really know much about it. I know what I like. Most of the time, though, I couldn’t tell you who composed it, let alone what it’s called 😊

Aaron Copland anyone?

Perhaps Elmer Bernstein?

When I looked at the list last night, I had that exact same thought – “Where are Copland and Bernstein?”

🤨 OK, maybe not exactly the same thought. I was thinking Leonard Bernstein, not Elmer.

I sang this in college and fell in love with it. The Lark – the story of St Joan of Arc. We didn’t do the monologues, just the music.

A lesser known work, but one of my favorites (CC: @StephieNorthCo):

One of my favorite orchestral works by Beethoven, starting from the transition between the 3rd and 4th movements:

I like the solo motet too, but I’m not a soprano.
Speaking of Mozart, I really like his Oratorio, La Betulia Liberata. I’m only on mobile now, so I can’t post a link.

If there’s a saxophone it’s likely that it is jazz. Maybe in the Romantic period, but it was invented after the Classical period.

Regarding Elmer Bernstein, if we start including film composers in the list, I could have favorites a mile long, but a lot of them were writing in styles in addition to purely classical.

Anyone up for an obligatory favorite composers poll? 😅
Crap! I went through that poll like five times and couldn’t find Chopin, so I voted “other”. It wasn’t until after voting that I saw him. 😦

If we’re talking “art music,” I guess film composers wouldn’t be included.

There are some soundtracks over the years that I’ve listened to over and over and over again. I think the first one I fell in love with was the soundtrack from The Color Purple. 😍

When it comes to composed soundtracks, off the top of my head I like David Raksin’s “The Bad and the Beautiful” (although he’s more famous for “Laura” soundtrack), Henry Mancini’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?”, and Randy Edelman’s “Gettysburg”.

I’m not a fan of all the John Williams and similar. I enjoyed the Star Wars theme as a complement to “Star Wars” the film, but I have no desire to sit around listening to it, or hear a pops orchestra play it, and I didn’t like John Williams’ newscast theme music at all - it replaced much better newscast theme music.

Edited to add, I regard this theme as a forgotten gem. I’ve never bothered to watch the movie. I doubt it is as good as this theme.

Even as a little girl – though I didn’t understand or appreciate the movies (and therefore paid no attention when my parents were watching them) – I always loved Henry Mancini’s music.

The Pink Panther films, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Great Race, The Glenn Miller Story (although it was probably Miller’s music I most enjoyed in that film)… as a kid I just loved how music could make me feel things inside, whether I was actually watching the movie or not.

That’s probably why I’m a musician and a music teacher. 😄

Absolutely. “In the steppes of central Asia”, by Borodin is wonderful at painting a musical picture of army coming close, marching by and passing among other things. Wonderful.

Likewise “The Fountains of Rome” musically describes the Trevi Fountain to a tee.

Yes I enjoy classical. Frequently I have Biber’s Rosary Sonatas in the background while praying. I gravitate towards Catholic composers.

I selected Dvorak.

Prefer Mozart to Beethoven.

How bout Bruckner being added to the list?
