Clean, non-violent CURRENT TV

I must admit I tend to be rather picky. There is VERY little on modern TV I go out of my way to watch. I love British shows, but those seem to be going the way of American shows as well. There are exceptions.
British:
Still Open All Hours (the new series) is very good, gentle humor.
Death in Paradise, a British police show set in the Caribbean. Nothing overly violent or disgusting. Just well done mysteries with some humor.
USA:
American Pickers, the only ‘reality’ show I have any interest in.

“Reality” TV was always intended for older viewers. People who still watch Cable or Network TV. They are also cheap to make.

It’s funny that “one-camera” comedies are all the rage now and anything done in front of an audience is “old school”. They assume they are funny without ever seeing any reaction. They are like a stand-up comic doing his routine in an empty room.

If you work as a ranch hand than it would be perfect. For a desk type job, than yes, it would a bit too much.

Never saw it. But perusing the episode descriptions on Netflix, it appears to be more like a soap opera. In fact it appears most network TV shows are more similar to daytime soaps than ever before.
Clean and non-violent appear to be a thing of the past. I can think of very little made after 2000 that would qualify.

Hulu has a bunch of older shows. Netflix not so much.
There was news this week or last that Turner Classic Movies might get into the streaming business.

If you have TCM on your cable lineup, you can watch on demand films on the computer. I have the TCM app on my cell phone. You can watch live, and there is a decent sized list of on demand films.

I understand that soon they will offer another service together with Criterion Collection for streaming.

Among the current selections on TCM on demand are

Arsenic and Old Lace
Splendor in the Grass
Shane
Picnic

I really enjoy it. I actually probably see more films there than on Netflix.
 
Well, Son of Niall, I think it is kinda an anthology series in a way, so not quite soap opera genre, but of course, the show is so so so so so so so so so…so much better than the average or even above average soap opera.

And wow, you old guys really love reality TV, haha.

Anyway, interestingly, watching non DVRd TV, not through a streaming service, is becoming a minority activity, as most people now access TV through a streaming service or if they ever watch on TV with a DVR or OnDemand.
 
All I have is streaming I haven’t had cable in years.
Hulu recently made available the old Hopalong Cassidy TV series. It’s been fun watching these again, the theme song brings back many, many memories. What’s missing are the closing messages William Boyd gave at the end of each episode for the younger viewers.
Boyd, who was pretty wild in his youth, cleaned up his act because he knew he was a role model for thousands of kids.
Can you imagine ANY actor today doing that?
 
Turner Classic Movies when they are showing something from the Hay’s Code era.

EWTN is also a good pick.

Unfortunately, even channels such as Food Network and HGTV can have spiritually dangerous content such as scantily clad women on commercials. :nope:
 
Those of us with WIFI can watch things like HULU and NETFLIX which have enough clean entertainment to last the rest of our lives.
 
Supergirl is a current show that is pretty wholesome.

There’s some “violence” but it’s mild. Just Supergirl punching robots and aliens. She never kills though, which I find refreshing.

That’s really the only one I can think of right now.
 
For clean shows, it would be hard to beat documentaries.

I especially like shows on the Smithsonian channel.

To be fair, if I recall correctly, it was actually sort of subtle. I mean, it was obviously something that adults would get, but I’m not sure kids would connect the dots and be like “oh, they are lesbian”.

A lot of Adventure Time writing is a bit like Animaniacs was in the 1990’s or even older shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle. There were a lot of jokes in that show, that as a kid, went totally over my head… But as an adult, rewatching old episodes because of nostalgia, wondered how on earth it got by the censors.
