Well JB, I wouldnt stake my life on exactly, but I think ‘about 30’ means what it says. My estimate of Jesus birth is spring 5 BC (April?) and his baptism, end autumn 26 BC (Nov?), so that would make him 30yrs + 7months.

Forgive me for mentioning this, :o but I have published a book that would interest you. The Atonement Clock is my research on the ancient Sabbatical and Jubilee calendar cycles. It was only possible to find these cycles by closely studying the internal chronologies contained in both Testaments of the Bible. They are related to the coming of Messiah, and tie in with the dates that we are talking about.

I have received a lot of interest, and would appreciate an assessment of my work from a Catholic scholars perspective. I don’t have an online version, but the ‘readers edition’ is quite inexpensive. If a poster on this thread would like to get my ‘academic edition’, please send me a PM and I will provide a coupon.

Amazon here:

My store here:
Theophilus might have wanted to know how old He was when His ministry started and Luke might have said,"Uh, 30."😃

Bear in mind that it was customary for Levites to begin their ministry at 30, and the age when a Jewish man could be considered a Rabbi.

No, he wasnt a Levite, but age 30 was a generally accepted ‘maturity milestone.’ Thats all Im saying.

Christmas has started here, so I must be brief. My effort to reconcile Enochian literature to our Gregorian calendar was similar to that of Jean Carmignac, but I ran into a difficulty and republished an ‘academic version’ of my book last year. You can read my most recent paper on what I believe to be the ancient Hebrew calendar here.

Bart, JB Bro, please check your PMs.
Thank you, Cyberseeker. Now, at last, I’ve been able to open your attachment, and I’ve replied to your PM. If you’d rather carry on the conversation here, or start a new thread, or keep it to PMs, I’ll be happy to go along with whatever you decide.

Bart

Rather than derail this topic, Ill start a new thread in the Apologetic area. Just thinking of a suitable topic title. How about, “Enoch’s calendar - background to the times of John the Baptist”?

Family arriving today, so I may be delayed.

Yup, that title looks very clear. But who not put your new thread right here, in the Sacred Scripture forum?

As I said in post #97, my estimate of Jesus birth is spring 5 BC (April?) and his baptism, end autumn 26 BC (Nov?), so that would make him 30yrs + 7months when he began his ministry. Just because Herod killed the infants up to 2 years old does not mean Jesus had to be 2 years old when Herod ordered their deaths. He was brutal enough to have made a wide sweep.

However, I am open to a late 6 BC birth date. That would make Jesus 31 years old when he began his ministry. Hmmm, :hmmm: OK, I’ll wear it at a push.

If Jesus was 30 and a half when he was baptized, then he would be in his 31st year.

Execpt that the Jewish rendering of years was not our rendering of years. So as I said earlier, Jesus would be in the 31st year of his life if he was baptized on 26 A.D. and born on 5 B.C. And as I pointed, out Herod may not have died in 4 B.C. but in 1 B.C.

Your point revolves around Luke’s comment in 3:23, “Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli” However, your insistence on a precise 30 years is not how Luke expressed it. He used the word “about” in the same way as the word is used in the feeding of the 5000. It was not exactly 5000 people - it was “about” 5000.

So, I dont intend to wring anybody’s nose over Jesus’ precise age when he began his ministry.
Thirty? Thirty-one? Either will do me.
Thirty-two? That might worry me.
Thirty-three? Now you’ve got a scrap. :blackeye:

I wasn’t. That was your understanding.
