All right,
Over the past year or so I’ve posted on here a handful of times about self defense etc. I’ve always gotten great answers and support from people. I want to be a cop, I feel called to protect people and to be a part of the ‘fine line.’
I know the Cathechism/Church teachings and I absolutely believe them without a doubt. I feel like I could do a good job and that I have a good temperament for the things that I could see etc. I’ve done a rode along/ shadow with an officer and I work part time in a police station while at school- I’m getting experience with the general environment and people, and I absolutely love it so far.
I understand that self defense is not murder and is not sinful given that the circumstances weren’t abused etc. Really the only argument that bothers me came from an Orthodox perspective. I believe some Orthodox teach more or less exactly what the Catholic Church teaches, but one person had an argument that really bothered me. Shouldn’t we care about the attacker’s soul? Their reasoning was that you shouldn’t defend yourself because you know Christ for salvation and can accept death to get your reward. If you kill the attacker defending yourself then you do not allow them time to repent and know Christ for salvation. So it’s ad if you are sending them to hell to save yourself.
I really feel called to the job, if I kill someone defending myself or others it will be the hardest thing I have to do. It will probably bother me or make me feel guilty but I feel like I have what it takes to make the hard decisions and live with them. I feel like God will be next to me the whole time. Maybe that makes me a bad Christian or person for vein ready to deal with those things, I don’t know. Can anyone answer the argument and shed light on this?
Thank you.
