Clothes influence race perception
Scientists dressed people in either smart business attire or work overalls and asked onlookers to categorise the faces as white or black.
Faces were more likely to be seen as white when dressed smartly and black when in overalls, the researchers found.
Scientists think that if people are made aware of the strategies they use to evaluate other people, the effects of these subconscious judgements could be lessened.
“This is a really interesting paper testing hypotheses about how we categorise people,” said psychologist Lisa DeBruine who studies facial recognition at the University of Aberdeen and who was not involved in the work.
The researchers asked about 20 volunteers to assign men’s and women’s faces, which ranged in skin tone and outfit, to one of two race categories - white or black.
The team from Tufts University, Medford, Stanford University and University of California, Irvine, found that for the most racially ambiguous faces participants were 4% more likely to see a face as black if the person was wearing overalls rather than a suit.
In other words, the most ambiguous face was categorised as black about 61% of the time when wearing a suit, and 65% of the time when wearing overalls.
By tracking the volunteers’ hand movements as they moved a mouse to make their decision, the researchers were able to pick up on momentary hesitations giving them clues to how these decisions were made.
Of course the best race to be is green $$$$$

I wonder which race people who dress in long johns with the trap doors will be associated with?

A 4% difference among 20 participants, and somebody thinks this is significant?

Oshkosh makes clothes for adults? Learn something new ever day.
Folks sometimes dress their children as little farmers, with bib-fronts and even straw hats. Very cute to see them that way. 🙂

Visit a working farm, especially around here. Oshkosh and Dickies do good business in this state.
Yep, everyone I know who wears overalls are overweight white farmers or oil field hands. I can’t remember ever seeing a black man in a pair and there are some really redneck black men around here.

No wonder I’m paying so much for my kids college tuition. Funding this nonsense…😦

Oshkosh made work clothes for adults first, most famous for gear for railroad workers, and the children’s line was originally a copy of their most popular overalls for men. down here anyone in overalls is going to probably be branded as a redneck

The race would be Dog as in Goofy the Dog or perhaps Duck as in Daffy Duck.
I suppose so. They would be as likely to wear overalls and long johns as any human, and that is only because they were drawn in the twenties and the fashion stuck.

To me, blue overalls=older hillbilly (white) who probably hunts on a fence-jumping mule and thinks there’s no meal on earth better than squirrel gravy and biscuits and knows exactly where every morel is within a five mile circle.

Brown Carhart overalls are different. The wearers of those are white farmers with big bellies and arms like tree trunks, who wear them in the summertime without a shirt, or younger, thinner, ranchers who only wear them in the wintertime with several plaid shirts, long underwear and possibly a Carhart jacket, though wearing the jacket isn’t quite as manly as going without. A felt cowboy hat can make up for it, though, when it comes to manliness, but only if it’s significantly sweat-stained. Those guys are white too.

Should have added, their wives all have two first names that serve for one, e.g., Betty Mae or Sally Jean.

Never saw a real live black man in overalls.

Maybe though, for the twenty of so Brits? in the study, a conservative business suit is more associated with whites without swag though.
