FYI - for anyone who may have seen the new CNN piece about the Holy Father.

I looked and didn’t see another link posted about this article.

CNN Hatchet-Job on the Pope

speroforum.com/site/article.asp?id=40630&t=CNN+hatchet-job+on+the+Pope
Thank you for this link. These are tough times for the people of God, and His Holy Bride, The Roman Catholic Church. It is an onslaught that grinds away, seemingly unopposed, with openly unrestrained hostility. It is disheartening that we do not seem to have the great defenders of the Faith which once so gracefully represented our religion…and indeed all of Christ’s flock. Maybe they are coming…but they are certainly not yet here.

In a blessed dream, I imagine Saint Edith Stein sitting across the table from Bill Maher and Joy Behar, withering their arrogance into shame with her humility, grace and brilliance;
or Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman debating Hitchens on CNN, exposing his atheism as being the cynical, empty and bitter fraud that it is; or maybe G.K. Chesterton on MSNBC using his wit, piercing rhetoric and forceful dynamisn to reduce Richard Dawkins and his “New Atheism” down to the exploitive sham that it is.

Dear Lord, send to us new saints and prophets to defend Your Holy Name. That is my prayer.

I know I should have stopped watching this news channel a long time ago. I sort of started really watching it during Desert Storm when both my son’s were there. And have done ever since. But no more! After this and other reporting I’ve been disappointed with, I can’t trust them at all anymore. Thats it for me. And thanks for reminding me to send them an email to let them know that!

This Pope is, as is everything else, is expressed in the terms of politics. It is full of premises that, like other false premises, if taken as true then the conclusion is true. For example, the premise that had Ratzinger told Pope John Paul II then the sex abuse scandal would have been stopped in it’s tracks, but since (this is the conclusion) Ratzinger didn’t so the sex abuse scandal continued.

These so called self-righteous politicos began with Cardinal Ratzinger when he was elected and will continue.

There was just a thread about this that was getting good responses/answers and it just disappeared with no explanation…

The frightening thing is that these attacks are not accidental; they are premeditated. I recall reading on this very forum an article giving information as to what went on at a homosexual activist banquet of some sort, where HBO was being feted for their strong support of the radfical gay agenda. It occurred in California in the aftermath of the gay marriage proposition failure.

The interesting (disturbing) aspect of this was the keynote address, which was given by some media bigwig, who happened to be a radical, militant homosexual. In this speech, this man laid out a master plan of media assaults to be carried out on the Roman Catholic and the Mormons, which he advised will come in waves, so as not to be transparent. They more or less swore a blood-vow to get revenge on those two religions.

If there is a good archivist out there, could you please link this for us , so that we might understand a battleplan which is unfolding before our eyes. These attacks are coordinated, and they are timed…and they are diabolically well planned.

CNN quit being a “News Channel” several years ago. The more correct term to describe them is “Media Outlet”.

You are probably talking about this CNA article:

Wealthy homosexual activist advises ‘active measures’ against religious opponents

The onslaught by people behind the homosexual agenda and complicit mainstream media render me incredulous and speechless. The media is not obliged to be charitable, but the least it can do is stick to its duty by reporting the truth, not hastily reached and unverified conclusions.

This Pope is not shirking away from the Church’s responsibility to victims of clergy abuse. He bears his cross in all humility and grace.

Pope BXVI is in my night prayers and rosary intentions.

“For neither does he [the Devil] seek those whom he has already subdued, nor does he take the trouble to overthrow those whom he has already made his own. The foe and enemy of the Church despises and passes by those whom he has alienated from the Church, and led without as captives and conquered; he goes on to harass those in whom he sees Christ dwell.” – Saint Cyprian (Epistle 56)
Pope Benedict XVI is innocent

Bill Donohue’s (Catholic League) response on Sept 28 2010 gives excellent information about the disingenuous reporting, failure to follow up to get the full perspectives to get to the truth, and thereby shows the intentions CNN to purposely malign the Pope and the Church. From a practical point of view their biased reporting has contributed to their loss of viewership. The average folk are much smarter than the elitist CNN thinks they are.

How do you recommend handling it ? A good Corinth style housecleaning. Have the CC church have their own investigation and trial and turn the guilty and those who covered/ moved the guilty(accessories to the crime) over to the authorities? The media won’t let up till they see something done.

The media is a beast that does not get satisfied, no matter what. It is in bed with organizations that have targeted the Church as their enemy, mainly for its unchanged teachings on homosexuality and abortion, which I fully support.

The subject of this thread is the CNN report which wrongly concluded that Cardinal Ratzinger was responsible for and had the authority to police clergy abuse before 2001. It was just piling untruths and half truths together with some truths.

Admittedly, the Church was slow to act, but there is a misconception that it has not moved to investigate the cases. Here in the U.S, for example, the Catholic Bishops commissioned the John Jay College of Criminal Justice to investigate the problem. In 2004, the college came up with the John Jay Report, acknowledging where abuse did occur, and attributing the problem to the hierarchy’s failure to grasp the seriousness of the problem, overemphasis on the need to avoid scandal, use of unqualified treatment centers, misguided willingness to forgive (forgiveness and redemption are important Church teachings), and insufficient accountability. In the backdrop, the Church has had to deal with priests leaving their vocation and a decrease in applicants to the priesthood.

In substantiated cases, payments were already made and settlements reached to compensate victims. The process is still ongoing in mass tort or class action litigation by diocese. Of course it is slow, as cases still need to be investigated and reviewed one by one, so as to throw out the fraudulent claims. Those priests guilty of crimes against minors were tried and put behind bars where they belong.

I do not know how or what the Church should do with those in the hierarchy who provided cover to the abusing priests.

There is no question that the Church is in a deep crisis, but corrections were and are being undertaken, i.e., laicization or defrocking where appropriate. Pro-active claim and risk management programs, as well as best practices, have been instituted and being implemented in each and every parish now. Applicants for priesthood also undergo stricter background checks and psychological testing in an effort to weed out candidates who are not suited for the vocation.

Pope BXVI has also expressed publicly his condemnation of the abuses and sorrow for the victims in more than one occasion. In addition, he has met with some victims to express a direct apology for the sins of the offending priests.

Clearly, the Church has undertaken efforts in house cleaning, in my view.

Thank you dear friend in Christ for you open and honest commentary…We need to pray for each other and those in authority to use the grace given us to live above reproach in this wicked an perverse time…

Part of the problem is the constant use of the term ‘cover-up’.

Today in October 2010, ‘cover-up’ is automatically understood with the implication that not only did the bishops ‘know’ of the abuses, they deliberately, with the full understanding of pedophilia that we have today, ‘let’ the priests have full run to ‘do it again’ with unspecting innocents in a ‘new’ parish, solely in order to keep the Church’s ‘image’ that of ‘purity.’

The problem is that in the vast majority of the cases, the ones that took place decades ago, not only did the bishops not have the understanding of pedophilia we have today, they were assured by both the medical and legal experts that the course of action of transfer of a ‘cured’ priest to a new parish without any ‘knowledge’ by the new parishoners of the former abuses was the PROPER procedure to do. I repeat, both the medical AND legal EXPERTS gave their sanction to this procedure, and NOT JUST IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. Abusers in the Protestant churches, in the public schools, even in families, were assured that the way to handle the abuse was to ‘cure’ the abuser and then give him the chance to ‘live a normal life’ in a situation where he was not ‘judged’ by his former deeds.

Now tell me please how, under that situation whereby not only the Church, but the medical and legal professionals,
** ESPOUSED the ‘transfer’ of the ‘cured’ abuser to a ‘new venue’, COULD POSSIBLY BE A COVERUP AS WE UNDERSTAND THE TERM?**

WHERE were the LEGAL AUTHORITIES? WHERE were the doctors complaining of the Church’s actions (not to mention the actions of all the other churches, the schools, the various institutions throughout the U.S. and world wide)?

Oh, that’s right. The DOCTORS and the LEGAL PROFESSION were the ones advising the Church TO LET THE ABUSERS (supposedly cured) have a 'FRESH START.'

WHERE, oh WHERE is the outrage directed at the doctors who were WRONG and the lawyers and the police who were WRONG?

Why are THEY not being prosecuted and editorialized about for THEIR PART in the so-called COVERUPS?

**Please tell me why it is only the CHURCH which is being held up as monsters of ‘coverups’ when it was an established practice for all, done on the EXPERT ADVICE of DOCTORS AND LAWYERS/POLICE? **

So basically your laying blame outside the church ? No one was moved around under the guise that he would be a repeat offender ?

Yes, I agree. Thanks for the kind words.

You have a point but I do not agree with the ultra-defensive stance. Of all religions, the Catholic Church is the favorite “whipping post” of critics who want more than anything else to have a secular world devoid of religion, as far away from God as possible. Statistics tell us that clergy abuse in the CC is no more than the percentage among Protestant churches, no more than in schools were teachers abuse their young students.

It gives me comfort that the gates of hell have not prevailed against the Church in its 2,000 year history. I believe in the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ that they never will, when He said the words to Simon, calling him Peter, the rock of the Church that He was entrusting to him as its first Pope.

It is understandable to associate something sinister to the word “cover up”. It connotes knowledge of an error and a deliberate subsequent act to hide the error. The media uses it to amplify the negligence, of course. However, the John Jay Report did find the Church’s overemphasis in avoiding scandal and lack of accountability in its ranks.

In the professional liability world of doctors and lawyers, what is used to measure if an act is negligent (the abuse or covering the abuse) is the reasonable standard in the community in that period of time, and if the alleged negligence caused injury and damages. IOW, would a reasonable person (bishop) think that an abusing priest would not repeat the offense? What if the acts were repetitive? What would have been the reasonable thing to do with failed rehabilitative treatment? I’m sure each case is a little bit different, but triers of fact look for a pattern. This is the additional challenge of the Church in its defense.

I do not think there is a prayer to hold the physicians who treated the abusers and pronounced them “rehabilitated” and the attorneys helping the Church with the abuse claims likewise responsible in this decades-long problem of the Church.

We can take heart that since 2005 when the College of Cardinals elected Cardinal Ratzinger to succeed Pope JPII, he has been handling the huge problem squarely, in the direction it should go. He is not being too defensive, admitting that a number of the clergy caused harm and pain to the young victims and that the Church should have acted earlier and done more in stemming the problem.

In Sunday Mass today, I prayed most fervently for Pope BXVI during the memorial acclamation following the Eucharistic prayer.

I entreat the Catholic and Christian readers of this post to pray for the Pope.
