little odd about a 40 year old who wants to pretend to be a lion on a Saturday morning.

I’d dress up as Pikachu. But only if I’m getting paid…

It’s a generational thing. I’d also attend Star Wars Conventions.

Generational? That doesn’t explain it. Conventions have seen an increase in sexually perverse materials and behaviors. That’s too bad. If I go to another convention, I’ll be sure to make sure certain things are not on their program list.

I think most Star Wars or Pokémon Conventions are okay. I’m not sure where you’re attending 😒

Seems being a nerd has become socially acceptable. I remember growing up,when the new kids calling themselves nerds were the same ones who used to bully me and beat me up for reading Dragonlance and painting miniatures. 20 or 30 years age preps and such would never have wanted anything to do with nerd culture. But now there are kids wearing fake glasses calling themselves nerds just to be cool. I even saw a “homie” going to a con one time.

Respectfully, the date on the calendar changes nothing, only people change things. Here I am at a comic book convention and I find out a prostitute (falsely called a ‘porn star’) is there. Who allowed this? Who thought this was OK?

This is sadly very true. I used to attend anime conventions, and there was always an undercurrent of sexual stuff, especially with the cosplaying. My wife and I went to Akon a few years ago on a whim, and it was terrible. On our way in I saw a young woman wearing a skirt that barely got below the pelvis. She was cosplaying as a character from some game, and didn’t care at all that she was basically naked.

Needless to say, my wife and I have not been back since, which is sad, because anime used to be a big part of our lives. We met because of it, but now we’re both ashamed of the culture that’s grown up around it.

Nerd culture has always been self-destructive, and I say that as a lifelong nerd. Even at the height of my nerdiness, there were groups I couldn’t help but make fun of, like the Vampire:The Masquerade larpers.

Part of me is happy nerd culture has become more accepted, but with that acceptance comes a lot more of the behaviors and subcultures that nerds used to dislike about their non-nerd brethern.

And don’t get me started on Big Bang Theory… frikin nerd blackface…

Don’t go then :man_shrugging:t2: Unless they enforce a dress code, you’re gonna get that.

The problem is there is decreasingly little good… I look at each season’s show list and some many of the titles are just so abhorrent…

Why are lolis and incest so freaking popular right now… it’s messed up…

That said, My Hero Academia has quickly become my favorite shounen manga in recent years, so it’s not all bad.

Not everything people do to self-medicate for anxiety, self-loathing, emotional trauma or any other psychological or emotional wound is really a medication. As often as not, the “medication” becomes another problem that has to be peeled away to get at the healthy life it was supposed to provide.

I’d say that dressing up in furry costumes, like drinking alcohol, is fine when it is something done purely for conviviality and in moderation. When it becomes the center of your life or something you need to have in order to feel relaxed or even normal, you need serious help. Do Not Pass Go. Do Not Reach for a Drink or a Costume or whatever it is you Need to Feel Normal that is outside yourself. Get Help.
