I see. So then, you believe it’s strange to give people an opportunity to ask for prayer?
Not at all… Catholics ask our glorified brothers and sisters to do just that all the time.

Really? You don’t think there’s a “scriptural directive” to repent of your sins and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord?
Agreed. Sounds like a work(s) to me.

Actually, whenever we baptise somebody, we understand that they will probably have family members there who may not know exactly what baptism is, so we always explain that being baptised does not make one born again.
Agreed ,… it is a baptism of water and the Spirit… do you explain that Catholic understanding too?

We also go through the scriptures and explain how and why Christ instituted this ordinance.
Ordinance huh…?? Ordinances don’t exude grace… sacraments do.

Once again, another thread that Pope pastor jim has derailed.

Why do you guys even bother with this… pearls before swine mean anything to you!

Peace!

Because of the many who visit this site…

It would not be very charitable or truthful to let Jim’s errors go unanswered. Souls are at stake.

Actually, if you look at any of my off-topic posts, you’ll see that they’re only in response to things your fellow Catholics have brought up.

While I admit I shouldn’t have taken the bait, if you’re going to be consistent, then you must also acknowledge that their posts were grossly off-topic.

No PJ, there was no bait. feedmysheep was giving the OP some info to give to his co-worker. You read this and answered back with your usual hate filled rehtoric, that had nothing to do with the thread!

I read the link. You lost me at “and I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, all the angel and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.” 🤷

Peace:thumbsup:

Oh, yeah. That was certainly hate filled and terrible.

Wow! An evangelical Christian who doesn’t believe in praying to the dead! Who knew that would ever happen.

The ironic thing is that even the OP acknowledged that there are things about the mass that she was afraid her friend my find strange or disagree with, and I don’t see you calling here “hate-filed”. But then, she’s not a non-Catholic so your rules don’t apply to her.

And, by the way, if it had nothing to do with the thread, why did feedmysheep bring it up in the first place?

If somebody decides they want to be a part of our church because they’re impressed by my degrees, then they’re probably not the kind of people we’re going to want for members.
If I were to want to be a part of your church, I wouldn’t be looking at your degrees; I would be looking for either (a) a demonstration that you were called by a superior authority who himself had a legitimate claim to his office, or (b) the Scripture required miracles, signs, and wonders that would verify/authenticate your extraordinary calling as a pastor.

And if that was your standard, then we probably would not approve you for membership.

Thanks, crenfro.

Feedmysheep, that is a great link. I’m learning quite a bit from it myself.

A How do I go about introducing the Church to an evangelical church shopper? I would think not having any experience with the Catholic Church, the Mass would be intimidating. I don’t want to scare her off with too many details, but I think she should know some basics before going to Mass.

Any suggestions?
bring her to Mass, and let the Holy Spirit take over.
the first few times, just be guided by her questions in what to explain, and what to skip over for the time being. When she expresses interest in learning more, help her use the missalette or other worship aid. go slow, don’t be too overwhelming. When she is ready for more formal instruction she will probably ask, and you can be her RCIA sponsor. woo woo, evangelization in action, good for you. your contact with your friend, by the way, is the way most new Catholics come into the Church.

Thanks, puzzleannie. The Holy Spirit definitely took over - she’s signed up for OCIA. We attended the first class this week. 🙂

😦

I got an email from my coworker thanking me for taking her to Mass and to a week of RCIA, but she has decided to return to her other church. Perhaps with prayers she may change her mind some day.

you tried, but God makes the rest happen.
i’ll pray that your effort will grow with her over time.

I just want to let you know that I just said a prayer for your co-worker that the LORD would bring her home, and I also pray that the Spirit of Truth gives you the right words to speak to her.

I'm a recent convert myself, who came into the Church this past Easter. It was the greatest decision I made....EVER. I was non-denominational, until I listened to Scott Hahn. Please get your co-worker a copy of his conversion story. It changed my life. Many protestants don't want to hear Catholics opinions on their own faith, but when they hear of other protestants becoming Catholic, a sudden spark of interest occurs in their heart. Many Catholics tried explaining their faith to me, but I was stubborn and thought they were being biased. It was when I heard of Scott Hahn that made me ask myself, "Hmm....I wonder why a solid and studious Protestant anti-Catholic minister became Catholic? I gotta hear this...". That's all it took, hence leading me into the the ONE and ONLY Church founded by Jesus Christ Himself. Thanks be to God.

Keep your co-worker in your prayers, and I'll do the same. There is only so much we can do. The rest in in God's hands. :)
In Christ,
Justin

God used you to plant the seed. He will make sure it grows in His own time and in His own way. God bless you!

In the meantime, the Scott Hahn story is great, as someone mentioned. My wife likes to read any of the three volumes of "Surprised by Truth, by Patrick Madrid. Because these are short conversion stories, they can be read in short bursts with time to digest them before moving on to the next one.

God bless!

A co-worker of mine asked out of the blue about my church and is interested in going. I asked if she is Catholic, and she said, “No, but I’m saved.” She currently has no church and is looking for a place to call home.

Give your co-worker a little overview of what goes on in a Catholic mass and it might be a good idea to sit in the cry room. That way your coworker can feel comfortable asking questions. Also, make sure they now that they can’t take communion, but they can go up with you and get a blessing. I am a non Catholic Christian who is married to a Catholic and we’ve been attending church with each other since we got engaged.
